2018 Kentucky Derby workout report for February 11

As the Road to the Kentucky Derby heats up, there hasn’t been much change in regards to who is on top on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard. The races will be getting tougher, though, and there have been some upsets, so stay tuned!

Good Magic (24 Derby points) – Breezed five furlongs in 1:01.50 on Saturday, February 10, over the fast dirt at Palm Meadows Training Center; three-year-old debut scheduled in March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park for trainer Chad Brown.

Firenze Fire (24) – Followed Monday, January 29, half-mile breeze in :49.32 over Belmont Park’s fast dirt training track with runner-up finish in February 3 Wither Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct for conditioner Jason Servis; trainer said after race his charge would “probably” run in both the March 10 Gotham Stakes (G3) and April 7 Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct.

McKinzie (20) – Worked in company on Saturday, February 10, clocking five furlongs in 1:00.20 over Santa Anita Park’s fast main track; March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita or March 17 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park are the options for Bob Baffert trainee.

Bolt d’Oro (14) – Clocked half-mile in :47.80 over Santa Anita Park’s fast dirt on Thursday, February 8; owner/trainer Mike Ruis readying colt for belated sophomore bow in San Felipe Stakes (G2) on March 10 over the track.

Free Drop Billy (14) – Dale Romans trainee breezed a bullet five-eighths in :59.02 on Saturday, January 27, over Gulfstream Park’s fast dirt; work came one week before second-place run in February 3 Holy Bull Stakes (G2) on the track.

Solomini (14) – Recorded a half-mile, in-company move over Santa Anita Park’s fast dirt in :48.80 on Saturday, February 10; like stablemate McKinzie, trainer Bob Baffert is considering the March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita or March 17 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park.

Catholic Boy (14) – Breezed four furlongs in :49.20 on Sunday, February 4, over Tampa Bay Downs’ fast main track; made sophomore bow for trainer Jonathan Thomas a half-length second in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at that track February 10; before race Thomas mentioned March 10 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) or Gulfstream Park’s Florida Derby (G1) on March 31, but afterward commented “everything is in play.”

Avery Island (14) – Logged five-furlong breeze in 1:00.75 on Saturday, January 27, over the fast dirt at Palm Meadows Training Center; Kiaran McLaughlin trainee captured three-year-old debut a week later with a two-length victory in the Wither Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct on February 3; after Withers, McLaughlin ruled out March 10 Gotham Stakes (G3) due to one-mile distance.

Instilled Regard (14) – Caught going six furlongs in 1:13 on Saturday, February 10, over Santa Anita Park’s fast main track; Jerry Hollendorfer charge entered in February 17 Risen Star Stakes (G2) back at Fair Grounds, site of his 3 3/4-length Lecomte Stakes (G3) tour de force on January 13.

Enticed (13) – Covered half-mile in :49.75, breezing, on Friday, January 26, over Palm Meadows Training Center’s fast dirt; Kiaran McLaughlin trainee was well-beaten in three-year-old bow a week later when fourth in Holy Bull Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on February 3.
