2018 Kentucky Derby workout report for February 18

Bravazo jumped to the top of the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard thanks to a 21-1 upset win in the Risen Star Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds on Saturday.
That race kicked off the Championship segment of the Road to the Kentucky Derby series of points races, offering up 50-20-10-5 points to the respective top four runners and catapulting Bravazo to number 1 on the Leaderboard.

Bravazo (54 Derby Point) – D. Wayne Lukas trainee was awarded a 98 BRIS Speed figure for earning his first stakes victory in the February 17 Risen Star Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds; Awesome Again colt, scheduled to rejoin his trainer at Oaklawn Park Sunday afternoon, expected to return to New Orleans for the March 24 Louisiana Derby (G2).
Good Magic (24) – Chestnut breezed five furlongs on February 17 in 1:00.45 over the fast dirt at Palm Meadows Training Center; three-year-old debut scheduled in March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park for trainer Chad Brown.
Firenze Fire (24) – Bay colt hasn’t recorded an official move since his runner-up finish in the February 3 Wither Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct for conditioner Jason Servis; trainer said after that race his charge would “probably” run in both the March 10 Gotham Stakes (G3) and April 7 Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct.
Snapper Sinclair (22) – Steve Asmussen trainee recorded a five-furlong breeze in :50 over Fair Grounds’ fast dirt on February 12, just five days before duking it out with Bravazo in the Risen Star Stakes (G2); the bay colt missed by only a nose in that contest while trying to lead all the way home.
McKinzie (20) – Worked in company on February 17, clocking a bullet six furlong in 1:12.60 over Santa Anita Park’s fast main track; March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita or March 17 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park are the options for the Bob Baffert trainee.
Instilled Regard (19) – Jerry Hollendorfer pupil finished fourth by 2 1/4 lengths as the 7-5 favorite in the February 17 Risen Star Stakes (G2) at Fair Grounds, site of his 3 3/4-length Lecomte Stakes (G3) tour de force on January 13.
Bolt d’Oro (14) – Mick Ruis-bred/owned/trained runner covered five furlongs in a bullet :59.40 over Santa Anita’s fast dirt on February 14; bay colt is scheduled to make his belated sophomore bow in the San Felipe Stakes (G2) on March 10.
Free Drop Billy (14) – Chestnut returned to the worktab with a half-mile breeze in :48.13 over Gulfstream Park’s fast dirt on February 18 for conditioner Dale Romans; colt made his three-year-old bow a runner-up effort in the February 3 Holy Bull Stakes (G2).
Solomini (14) – Bob Baffert pupil recorded a bullet five-eighths in :59.40 while in company over Santa Anita’s fast dirt February 17; like stablemate McKinzie, the chestnut colt is under consideration for the March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita or March 17 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park.
Catholic Boy (14) – Trainer Jonathan Thomas saddled charge for a half-length second in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs on February 10; before that race Thomas mentioned the March 10 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) or Gulfstream Park’s Florida Derby (G1) on March 31, but afterward commented “everything is in play.”
