2018 Kentucky Derby workout report for January 28

It’s less than 100 days until the 2018 Kentucky Derby, and the main contenders are busy working and running their way into contention.

Each Sunday, the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard top 10 will be showcased in regards to works, last starts and, if known, upcoming races.

Good Magic (24 Derby points) – Breezed a bullet half-mile in :48.45 over fast track at Palm Meadows Training Center on Sunday, January 28; second move since winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) last November 4 and first since honored as 2017 champion two-year-old male on Thursday, January 25; targeting Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on March 3.

Firenze Fire (20) – Last official work, four-furlong breeze in :50.88, came Monday, January 8, over Belmont Park’s fast dirt training track; since then has captured the January 13 Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct; Gotham Stakes (G3) on March 10 at Aqueduct likely next.

McKinzie (20) – Covered a half-mile in :49 over Santa Anita Park’s fast main track on Sunday, January 21; earned a stellar 104 BRIS Speed rating for taking the January 6 Sham Stakes (G3); March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park on radar.

Bolt d’Oro (14) – Blew out three furlongs over Santa Anita’s fast dirt on Saturday, January 27, in :36.80 in first official move since finishing third in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile; San Felipe scheduled as next start.

Solomini (14) – Most recent official work came Thursday, December 28, as four furlongs in :49 over Santa Anita’s fast dirt; won the December 9 Los Alamitos Futurity (G1) prior to the work but was disqualified and placed third that day.

Instilled Regard (14) – Worked a half-mile in :47.80 on Santa Anita’s fast main track Wednesday, January 24; first move since romping in the Lecomte Stakes (G3) at Fair Grounds on January 13.

Enticed (12) – Breezed four furlongs in :49.75 on Palm Meadows Training Center’s fast dirt Friday, January 26; last seen taking the November 25 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs.

Free Drop Billy (10) – Posted a five-furlong bullet breeze in :59.02 over Gulfstream Park’s fast dirt on Saturday, January 27; winner of the October 7 Breeders’ Futurity (G1) at Keeneland prior to a well-beaten ninth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last out.

Greyvitos (10) – Survivor of the deadly San Luis Rey fire traveled five furlongs in 1:01.80 on Santa Anita’s fast dirt Sunday, December 10; following that work the colt shipped to Remington Park to take the December 17 Springboard Mile.

Catholic Boy (10) – Breezed five-eighths in 1:01 over fast main track at Tampa Bay Downs on Saturday, January 27; easily captured his dirt debut in the December 2 Remsen Stakes (G2) most recently at Aqueduct; February 10 Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs is target.
