2018 Kentucky Derby workout report for March 18
A number of workers took to the track in readiness for upcoming starts as the Kentucky Derby (G1) trail heats up.

Bravazo (54 Derby Points) – D. Wayne Lukas trainee breezed a bullet five furlongs in :59.60 over Oaklawn Park’s fast main track on March 18; Awesome Again colt targeting March 24 Louisiana Derby (G2) off a nose win in the February 17 Risen Star Stakes (G2) at 21-1.
Promises Fulfilled (52) – Shackleford chestnut readied for the Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park on March 31 with a half-mile breeze in :48.16 over that track’s fast dirt on March 17; Dale Romans charge wired the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) by 2 1/4 lengths at 18-1 last out on March 3.
Good Magic (34) – Trainer Chad Brown sent Breeders’ Cup champion out for a half-mile breeze in :48.90 over the fast dirt at Palm Meadows Training Center on March 17; Curlin sophomore finished third last out in March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream and is expected to show up at Keeneland on April 7 for the Blue Grass Stakes (G2).
Snapper Sinclair (22) – City Zip colt breezed five furlongs in 1:01 over Fair Grounds’ fast dirt on March 12 ahead of the March 24 Louisiana Derby (G2) at that New Orleans venue; Steve Asmussen pupil ran third in the January 13 Lecomte Stakes (G3) and just missed by a nose in the Risen Star Stakes (G2) last out on February 17, both at double-digit odds.
Strike Power (20) – Recent Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) runner-up prepared for the March 31 Florida Derby (G1) at Gulfstream Park with a half-mile breeze in :49.21 over that’s tracks fast dirt on March 16; Mark Hennig trainee suffered his first loss in the March 3 Fountain of Youth, one race after taking his stakes bow in the Swale Stakes (G3) on February 3.
Instilled Regard (19) – Dark bay son of Arch worked six furlongs on March 18 in 1:17.80 over Santa Anita Park’s fast dirt; trainer Jerry Hollendorfer indicated the Lecomte Stakes (G3) winner and Risen Star Stakes (G2) fourth-placer would likely make his final Derby prep on April 7 in either the Santa Anita Derby (G1), Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes (G2) or the Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct.
Catholic Boy (14) – Grade 2-winning son of More Than Ready clocked five furlongs in 1:00 at Bridlewood Farms near Ocala, Florida, on March 17 for trainer Jonathan Thomas; last-out Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) runner-up is scheduled to ship to Gulfstream Park on March 22 to complete preparations for the March 31 Florida Derby (G1).
My Boy Jack (12) – Keith Desormeaux trainee geared up for the March 24 Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds with a five-furlong, in-company move in 1:00.40 over Santa Anita Park’s fast dirt on March 17; Creative Cause colt romped by 4 1/4 lengths last out in the February 19 Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park in his first foray outside of California.
Greyvitos (10) – Adam Kitchingman charge worked six furlongs in 1:15.60 over Del Mar’s fast dirt on March 14; unraced since taking the December 17 Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park due to knee chips, the Malibu Moon colt is still under consideration for the Kentucky Derby and could reappear in competition in mid-April.

Bolt d’Oro (64) – Medaglia d’Oro colt will have a second shot at McKinzie as both are confirmed for the April 7 Santa Anita Derby (G1); Mick Ruis-owned and -trained colt was elevated to first after finishing second by a head following a stretch-long, bump-filled duel with McKinzie in the March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park.
Enticed (63) – Kiaran McLaughlin-trained Godolphin homebred scheduled to return to Aqueduct and the site of his Gotham Stakes (G3) victory on March 10 for the Wood Memorial (G2) on April 7.
Magnum Moon (50) – Malibu Moon colt joined the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard on March 17 thanks to a 3 1/2-length romp in his stakes debut, the Rebel Stakes (G2), at Oaklawn Park; Todd Pletcher pupil is now unbeaten from three starts and is expected to go next in the Arkansas Derby (G1) on April 14 at Oaklawn.
Quip (50) – Distorted Humor colt upset the March 10 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) at 19-1 by a length while making his sophomore debut; one day after that race trainer Rodolphe Brisset mentioned sending the bay to Keeneland, where the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) will take place on April 7.
McKinzie (40) – Trainer Bob Baffert has confirmed his charge for the April 7 Santa Anita Derby (G1) after making noises about taking him somewhere else following the Street Sense colt’s disqualification from first to second in the March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park.
Solomini (34) – Curlin chestnut finished second as the even-money favorite in the March 17 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park; conditioner Bob Baffert has already indicated he plans to wheel the sophomore back off three weeks’ rest for the April 7 Santa Anita Derby (G1).
Flameaway (30) – Trainer Mark Casse looking at April 7 Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland for Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) winner, who finished second last out in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on March 10.
Firenze Fire (29) – Jason Servis trainee headed to April 7 Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct after finishing fourth most recently in the Gotham Stakes (G3) on March 10.
Free Drop Billy (24) – Union Rags colt likely for the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) on April 7 at Keeneland trainer Dale Romans said after chestnut finished third as 8-5 favorite in March 10 Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct.
Combatant (22) – Steve Asmussen charge still seeking a first stakes win following a third-place run in the March 17 Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park; Scat Daddy colt ran second in both the February 19 Southwest Stakes (G3) and Smarty Jones Stakes on January 15 in his prior two efforts.
Old Time Revival (20) – Brethren colt likely targeting April 7 Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct after finishing second at 35-1 in the Gotham Stakes (G3) last out for trainer Kenneth Decker.
Avery Island (14) – Kiaran McLaughlin trainee is sidelined for 90 days and off the Derby trail after coming back lame from a March 12 breeze; Street Sense colt captured the February 3 Withers Stakes (G3) by two lengths at Aqueduct while making his sophomore bow as the even-money favorite.
