2018 Kentucky Derby workout report for March 25
This weekend’s two Kentucky Derby (G1) preps – the Louisiana Derby (G2) on March 24 and Sunland Derby on March 25 – once again shook up the Leaderboard. With the Florida Derby (G1) only a week away and Keeneland just around the corner, things are heating up on the Road to the Kentucky Derby!

Enticed (63 Derby Points) – Godolphin homebred breezed a half-mile in :49.60 over the fast dirt at Palm Meadows Training Center on March 23 for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin; first move by the Medaglia d’Oro colt since his triumph in the March 10 Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct; dark bay likely to return to that venue for the April 7 Wood Memorial (G2).
Promises Fulfilled (52) – Dale Romans pupil breezed five furlongs in 1:02.04 over the fast main track at Gulfstream Park on March 24; Shackleford chestnut enters the March 31 Florida Derby (G1) at that track off a 2 1/4-length victory in the March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) at 18-1.
Quip (50) – Distorted Humor colt breezed four furlongs in :48.40 on March 24 over the fast dirt at Tampa Bay Downs in his first move since upsetting the March 10 Tampa Bay Derby (G2) at 19-1 while making his sophomore bow; Rodolphe Brisset trainee could show up at Keeneland for the April 7 Blue Grass Stakes (G2) in his final prep for the Kentucky Derby (G1).
Good Magic (34) – Champion son of Curlin breezed five furlongs in 1:01.45 on March 24 over the fast dirt at Palm Meadows Training Center for trainer Chad Brown; chestnut colt ran third in the March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) while making his sophomore bow and is likely to appear at Keeneland for the Blue Grass Stakes (G2) on April 7.
Flameaway (30) – Mark Casse trainee breezed a bullet half-mile in :48.95 over the fast dirt at Palm Meadows Training Center on March 25; Scat Daddy chestnut finished second most recently in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2) on March 10 and is targeting April 7 Blue Grass Stakes (G2) at Keeneland.
Free Drop Billy (24) – Dale Romans pupil breezed four furlongs in :49.91 over Gulfstream Park’s fast main track on March 24; Union Rags colt likely targeting Blue Grass Stakes (G2) on April 7 at Keeneland after running a well-beaten third as the 8-5 favorite in March 10 Gotham Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct.
Strike Power (20) – Speightstown chestnut breezed a bullet half-mile in :47.87 over Gulfstream Park’s fast main track on March 23 for trainer Mark Hennig; Swale Stakes (G3) winner headed to March 31 Florida Derby (G1) off nice second in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on March 3.

Noble Indy (110) – Todd Pletcher trainee earned his place in the Kentucky Derby starting gate, and atop the Derby Leaderboard, with a close victory in the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds on March 24.
Bolt d’Oro (64) – Mick Ruis-owned and -trained colt scheduled to work on March 26 in first move since being awarded the win in the March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park; Medaglia d’Oro colt will face off against the disqualified winner of that race, McKinzie, yet again as both are targeting the April 7 Santa Anita Derby (G1).
Bravazo (54) – D. Wayne Lukas trainee was sent off second favorite in the March 24 Louisiana Derby (G2) but faded badly to be eighth under the wire; Awesome Again colt entered the nine-furlong contest off a nose win in the February 17 Risen Star Stakes (G2) at 21-1.
Magnum Moon (50) – Todd Pletcher trainee moved his career mark to a perfect three-for-three when taking the March 17 Rebel Stakes (G2) in his black-type debut; Malibu Moon bay colt expected to return to Oaklawn Park for the April 14 Arkansas Derby (G1).
Runaway Ghost (50) – Todd Fincher charge easily dominated 11 rivals in the Sunland Derby (G3) on March 25 to earn his shot at Kentucky Derby glory; Ghostzapper colt already boasts seven career starts and was a late nominee to the Triple Crown.
Lone Sailor (42) – Tom Amoss pupil headed to Kentucky Derby off close neck second in the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds on March 24; Majestic Warrior colt scheduled to ship to Churchill Downs in early April to begin Run for the Roses preparations.
McKinzie (40) – Bob Baffert charge scheduled to work March 26 ahead of final Kentucky Derby prep, the April 7 Santa Anita Derby (G1); Street Sense colt captured the March 10 San Felipe Stakes (G2) by a head but was disqualified to second for bumping rival Bolt d’Oro in the lane.
Solomini (34) – Curlin colt set for a March 26 move at Santa Anita Park ahead of April 7 Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct; Bob Baffert pupil finished second most recently in the Rebel Stakes (G2) on March 17 at Oaklawn Park.
My Boy Jack (32) – Keith Desormeaux-conditioned colt put in a furious rally from last to finish a close third in the Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds on March 24; Creative Cause dark bay entered that contest off a 4 1/2-length victory in the February 19 Southwest Stakes (G3) at Oaklawn Park in his first foray outside of California; co-owner Sol Kumin mentioned a possible start in the April 14 Arkansas Derby (G1) at Oaklawn if more points are needed to make Kentucky Derby (G1) field.
Firenze Fire (29) – Grade 1-winning Jason Servis charge considered probable for the April 7 Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct; Poseidon’s Warrior colt finished a well-beaten fourth last out in the Gotham Stakes (G3) on March 10 at the Big A.
Snapper Sinclair (22) – City Zip bay was a one-paced fifth throughout the March 24 Louisiana Derby (G2) at Fair Grounds last out; Steve Asmussen trainee just missed by a nose in the February 17 Risen Star Stakes (G2) one race prior.
Combatant (22) – Scat Daddy colt has strung together four straight stakes placings, including a third in the Rebel Stakes (G2) at Oaklawn Park most recently on March 17; Steve Asmussen pupil was also runner-up in both the February 19 Southwest Stakes (G3) and Smarty Jones Stakes on January 15 at Oaklawn thus far this season.
Blended Citizen (22) – Proud Citizen colt earned his first stakes win in the Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) over Turfway Park’s synthetic Polytrack on March 17; trainer Doug O’Neill considering wheeling bay charge back off three-week rest in Keeneland’s Blue Grass Stakes (G2) on April 7.
