A $31 Breeders Crown Upset; Gimpanzee, $13 Champ, $32 Exactor

At Philly there were six more Liberty Bell divisions, these were for soph trotters and pacers. Coming in third was the trend for these splits and it continued into other series (see Friday).

For the colt-pacers’ “Liberty” divisions we were third with Branquinho ($3.00) and Final Claim ($5.80). Skip To My Lou (13-1) finished fourth in the last of three. Favorites and second choices won that trio of events.

We came up with one winner in divisions for the colt trotters, the favorite Summit In Sight ($3.20, $2.60, $2.20). Favorites won the other two divisions, where we finished fifth with Captain Malicious (13-1) and sixth with Klutzy (4-1).


Friday, Oct. 25

At Hoosier, our finish-third streak ensued in Circle City divisions for sophs in both sexes and gaits. There was a single winner—Tellmeaboutit ($2.40, $2.20, $2.20 ok).

We finished third with Homer Hall ($2.20), Aunt Rose ($2.60), JK American Beauty ($2.10) and Lady Capulet ($3.20). We were beaten by favorites and finished off the board with Rockie Got Framed (16-1) and Nomo Volo (30-1). An 8-1 beat Lindys Crazy Hall (5-2) who finished sixth.

Saturday, Oct. 26, the sophomore Breeders Crown finals brought us a win with Gimpanzee ($13.10, $3.50, $3.30) and an exactor worth $32.60 with Greenshoe ($2.10, $2.10) second. We missed the triactor when Green Manalishi S (20-1) finished sixth.

We were second with each of our other first choices—Bettors Wish ($2.10, $2.10) and Tall Drink Hanover

 
BREEDERS CROWN COUNTDOWN

Saturday, Oct. 26 our Breeders Crown tally was a rumble on a rainy, windy night.

The older events came down to our best bet, in the trot, as the French invader won and paid off well. Bold Eagle ($5.70, $4.40, $3.30) was unbothered by the weather and his competitors, winning with gusto.

We lost the mare pace, as Caviart Ally did not enjoy our comparison of him and Wile E. Coyote, winning over our Shartin N ($2.10, $2.10 ok).

Jimmy Freight (4-1) lost the Open pace, finishing eighth; Weslynn Dancer (34-1), was in a dead-heat for fourth with Hannelore Hanover in the Mare Trot.


Friday, Oct. 25 we started the night off with a big Breeders Crown winner in the frosh-filly trot, winning with Ramona Hill ($31.80, $11.40, $4.90).

In the colt trot we were second with our first choice, Rome Pays Off ($22.40, $10.60).

We lost the other two freshman events. Capt Midnight was involved in one of two interference incidents, finishing fifth. The race winner, Papi Rob Hanover, was disqualified for interference; judges placed Tall Dark Stranger into the winner’s spot from second.

In the only other frosh final, we finished sixth with Alicorn (9-1) and our proposed exotic partner, Looksgoodinaromper (14-1) finished fifth. The penultimate win price of the night, a 27-1 shot, won.


H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 38 active horses (a 18-percent win hit rate and a 39-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate).

Brett Pelling “came halfway across the track” to get into the winner’s circle in the BC frosh-colt pace when the inquiry sign flashed. He never got to the circle. According to sources, Papi Rob Hanover’s driver knew there was trouble with the finish immediately. “David Miller told Tall Dark Stranger-driver Yannick (Gingras) that he should claim an objection, which Yannick agreed with and the judges certainly agreed, too.” The judges took a while reviewing the race, then determined that Papi Rob Hanover made contact with Tall Dark Stranger, causing that one to lose his momentum.” It was only the third time in BC history that resulted in a DQ.

Greenshoe, a son of Father Patrick, will not be going directly to stud after the Breeders Crown. According to trainer Marcus Melander Greenshoe may race again before the year is out—this time against older trotters. Melander said Greenshoe “will probably go for the TVG” stake at the Meadolands in November.

Lather Up, going to stud after retiring from an injury, will stand at Diamond Creek Farm Taylor Made Stallions. The two-time world champion (4,1:46) is a winner of $1,917,935. Diamond Creek Farm’s new facility is in Davenport, New York. His many track record performances are unmatched. He beat millionaires, including McWicked, Jimmy Freight, Courtly Choice and others, establishing himself as a dominant force on the track.

Hall of Famer Roger Huston, the “Voice of the Meadows” racetrack since 1976, resigned his position as announcer and TV host of Meadows Racing. His last day of announcing at the Pennsylvania track will be Saturday, Nov. 2. Huston is 77, said, “I am not retiring, just cutting back on the day-to-day announcing.” Huston was a race announcer at Ohio fairs, Lebanon, the Red Mile, Pompano, and in 1968 became the regular caller at the Little Brown Jug meet. Huston was an icon to anyone watching races at the Meadows.
