A look at the Fountain of Youth Day Late Pick 5
The late Pick 5 with a 15% takeout is one of the more attractive wagers on the stakes-laden Fountain of Youth Day card at Gulfstream Park on Saturday. Here's how I'll be playing the sequence.
Race 10 -- Maiden Special Weight
#2 HAUNT (6-1), a half to multiple Grade 1 winner Elate, is eligible to move forward off a fourth-place effort in his debut going short. #7 HIGH AMPLITUDE (9-2) overcame a slow start to finish a clear second to runaway winner Hidden Scroll first out and perhaps is the horse to beat here. #6 FELIX THE FOX (4-1) gets to try two turns for the first time after three placings in one-turn routes in New York. Son of Tapit and descendant of Azeri adds blinkers.
Race 11 -- Honey Fox (G3)
#1 PRECIEUSE (7-2) is a single based on a strong U.S. debut last summer in which she narrowly missed to stablemate Uni, eventual winner of the Matriarch (G1). Won the French 1000 Guineas (G1) two seasons ago.
Race 12 -- Davona Dale (G2)
Champion juvenile filly #1 JAYWALK (1-2) towers over these on most criteria, but drew the sometimes-tricky rail and any type of possible bad luck leaving the gate could leave a filly that coasted on the lead to wins in the Frizette (G1) and Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) potentially vulnerable. The most likely alternative win candidates are #5 CHAMPAGNE ANYONE (6-1), a solid third in the Forward Gal (G3) last time, and Canadian invader #6 BOLD SCRIPT (12-1), who has yet to try dirt but is certainly bred for it and is very consistent.
Race 13 -- Fountain of Youth (G2)
Will take a stand against impressive maiden winner #7 Hidden Scroll with the more seasoned #5 VEKOMA (7-2), one of last year's consistently swift two-year-olds when going two-for-two, including a 1 3/4-length score in the Nashua (G3).

Race 14 -- Mac Diarmida (G2)
#5 VETTORI KIN (12-1) had a few chances to run long last season. Didn't show up in the Nijinsky (G2), but won the Louisville H. (G3) for fun and was a good fourth in the United Nations (G1) when the speed didn't come back. #11 CHANNEL MAKER (2-1) much better than his last two outings would suggest and reunited with Rosario here. #9 KULIN ROCK (20-1) aggressively spotted here by Maker and on paper is not equal to stablemate #6 Zulu Alpha, but has a bit of a closing kick and will be a price even with Jose Ortiz up.
The 50-cent ticket:
2,6,7 with 1 with 1,5,6 with 5 with 5,9,11 = $13.50.
