Abrogate key to Oaklawn Pick 4 play on Jan. 24
An exciting 3-year-old filly, Abrogate, will make her second career start at Oaklawn Park on Sunday. The entry-level allowance is part of the Late Pick 4 sequence, and I will build a ticket around the Steve Asmussen-trained Abrogate.
Race 6 (4:38 p.m. ET)
A 6-furlong, $30,000 maiden claiming event starts out the sequence, and #5 Long Term Thinking should be the prohibitive favorite for Asmussen. The 5-year-old has been camera-shy -- five seconds a third from his last six starts –and I will buy the 10-horse field.
Race 7
#8 Hidden Scroll is the horse to beat in his first start for Brad Cox, but the 5-year-old is difficult to trust. I will add #5 American Butterfly to the ticket in the 6-furlong allowance. American Butterfly ran well over the track and distance last year for D. Wayne Lukas, and the 4-year-old appears to be training forwardly for his return.
Race 8
#4 Abrogate showed speed from the gate when making her career debut at Churchill Downs in mid-November, and the Outwork filly drew off spectacularly to win by six lengths in the 12-horse field. The $270,000 yearling purchase was flattered when the clear runner-up, Zoom Up, came back to win her next two starts for Tom Amoss, including a recent two-length allowance tally at Fair Grounds, and Abrogate has posted five works at Oaklawn for her return. Ricardo Santana Jr. will be up.
Race 9
A starter allowance concludes the sequence, and I will be three-deep with #1 Handy, #5 Solomonic, and #9 Trashtalkinyankee.
