Australian harness racing: Rockin’ at Redcliffe

Australian harness racing returns July 1 at 11 p.m ET, which is Thursday afternoon, July 2 in Queensland. 

Let's dive in and take a look at the nine-race card from Redcliffe Harness Racing Club.

Race 1

The action begins with the sorry condition for horses that “have never won a race,” with a field that has made a career of never winning races.

The least involved are a pair with only six tries each, and one of them tasted some purse money once.

That is why #1 Champagne Reactor is our best suggestion for a price play in this event. Beyond that win bet, you are on your own. 

Race 2

Allan Sanders’ #4 Downtown Lucca was among the favored in a contest much like this one. He was beaten by one of our longshots last time out at Albion and returns to the scene of his most recent win with a fine shot at the main reward.

Leaving to his left is #3 Zed Express. The last time he raced at Redcliffe (he has been parked at Albion for a while) his aggressive style found him wide and fast too early. Mitchell Dawson’s 6-year-old likes following winners and is good for exotics here.

Race 3

From the second row on the inside, #8 De Voyage was well meant at Albion last time out but was in the thick of field traffic, buried deeply, and finished seventh. Vicki Rasmussen has brought the mare to Redcliffe, where a steady ride could do the trick in the sprint lane late.

#1 Chromozone is in a spot for some piece of it all, if not the main piece of it all. In her most recent trip to Redcliffe, she had good early lick.

Race 4

We got a good price at Albion last time with #4 Somebeachsomegift, and there seems little reason not to back him again. It shouldn’t be a big price, but it could be a big win for the productive son of Somebeachsomewhere.

Always digging down for it, #5 Just One Good One is bound to be advancing in the late stages, and it would not be a surprise to see him take it by a nose or hair.

Race 5

#5 Joey Lincoln is improving greatly for the Barnes couple. The son of Sweet Lou has a win from six starts at Albion but has some excuses, all of them related to his rambunctious, get-out-of-my-way style, which is inherited. He is the only reason to play this race.

Race 6

Lola Weidemann’s #4 Bara Jayla loves Redcliffe money. She constantly picks up some purse change.

The mare may up her win total from a good starting spot, with some cover and a charge. They liked her to win last time for good reason.

Starting from the inside in the second row, #7 Studleigh Will could dominate this from the start but won’t be dueling if he knows what’s good for him. The McMullens’ gelding should cash something again, even if a good win price is missed.

Race 7

But for some wide-racing antics that put him in the death seat, #4 Kaanapali could have won against the likes of these last time out. The Shadow Play gelding is about as good as that sire has produced.

#8 Newmerella Ladykay has a shot up the sprint lane to pick up the penultimate prize for a good exacta.

Race 8

The Dawson boys’ #4 Showem Simon is gutsy and has his share of speed to make a winning trip in front, from behind, or paving a path late from the middle. A little luck may be needed along the way, but it could pay off.

Race 9

We liked #1 Too Good For You last week at Albion, but the field was too good that afternoon. Here, however, the Mr Feelgood product is much more at home and staying flat (he broke and was eliminated last time here) will give him the best chance to make this one look easy.
