Australian racing picks for Doomben
It is heading into winter in Australia, and for racing, that means the Queensland Winter Carnival.
Queensland doesn’t really ever get cold, though. Think Florida, and that’s Queensland in winter.
It even has a tourism slogan that says, "Beautiful one day, perfect the next."
What I’m getting at is there is a big night of racing tonight at Doomben, with six stakes on the card. It will get bigger from here, too, with the Stradbroke H. (G1) scheduled to run next weekend.
The other Aussie meetings tonight include Rosehill Gardens, Kembla Grange, and Belmont Park.
Here are a couple picks to get your night of Aussie action started.
Doomben, Race 1: #10 Gin 'N' Bitters
I thought we’d whet the appetite early with this mare. She was undefeated through her first three starts, before she was thrown in the deep end and put in a much tougher stakes race last start. She ran fifth in that race and was far from disgraced.
Tonight, she will drop considerably in class and is carrying a weight not far off what she carried to victory last time. There doesn’t appear to be a heap of competition in this race, so the 5-1 morning-line odds look generous!
Doomben Race 4 No. 1 Gotta Kiss
This filly was an impressive winner in her last start at Doomben, over the same distance she faces tonight. She has drawn the inside gate and will get a nice run just behind the speed.
Barring bad luck, she should be able to finish over the top of them down the stretch.
Another point to note is the blinkers go on for the first time, and jockey Stephanie Thornton sticks.
Good luck tonight!
