Australian racing picks for Doomben and Canterbury

June 9th, 2020

It’s the second biggest night of the week for Australian racing, and BetAmerica horseplayers have four Aussie Thoroughbred meetings and two harness meetings to feast upon.

If you only watch one race from Australia tonight, you may want to tune into the BetAmerica app or website to view the first at Canterbury.

There is a young filly called Covent Garden going around, and she is the half-sister of the mighty mare, Winx. Covent Garden is also trained by Chris Waller, and jockey Hugh Bowman will pilot the filly.

She’s had a bit of a break since she trialed in March, and she has trialed well at Canterbury previously. I expect her to go off around the 5-1 mark and run well.

Here are a couple of picks for some of the other races tonight.

Doomben, Race 2: #1 Hi Fiver

This gelding from the barn of Brian Wakefield is chasing a hat trick tonight, after he won at Doomben last start and at Gatton before that.

Because claiming apprentice jockey Justin Huxtable is engaged, Hi Fiver will actually carry less weight than what he carried to victory last start, over a similar distance at Doomben. He flew home late on that occasion and will likely be doing the same again tonight.

He is always honest and gives you a good run for your money.

Canterbury, Race 2: #4 Royal Marine

By North American sire Uncle Mo, this gelding is returning from a long layoff but won a recent trial at Rosehill.

It looks as though Waller may have spent some time working Royal Marine out. Royal Marine will wear blinkers and a tongue tie for the first time tonight.

He has shown plenty of ability in three starts to date, and so long as he handles the heavy track (he has finished third on a "Heavy 10" before), he will prove very hard to beat.

Good luck!
