Baffert pupils Roadster, Game Winner top Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool 4

Trainer Bob Baffert finished 1-2 in Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita Park with Roadster (#17) and Game Winner (#8), and on Sunday saw that pair go 1-2 again, this time in the 2019 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW).

Roadster was bet down as the 6-1 favorite by the time wagering closed at 6 p.m. on April 7. The Quality Road colt, who is now two-for-two as a sophomore, opened at 15-1 on the morning line of Pool 4.
Maximum Security (#13), hero of the Florida Derby (G1) on March 30, saw his 8-1 morning-line odds drop to 7-1 to be the second favorite on Sunday. He had more wagered on him to win the May 4 Kentucky Derby (G1) and thus was favored over Game Winner, who also closed at 7-1 after opening at 8-1.
Tampa Bay Derby (G2) hero Tacitus (#20) added the Wood Memorial Stakes (G2) to his resume Saturday and on Sunday saw his 30-1 opening odds in Pool 4 drop to 8-1. Like Maximum Security, he had more wagered on him and thus closed in front of Improbable (#10), another Baffert pupil who also had final odds of 8-1.
The fourth and final pool, which began April 5, featured 23 individual betting interests and a mutuel field comprised of “All Other 3-Year-Olds” (#24), which increased from 15-1 on the morning line to 19-1 pool close.
Total betting over the three days reached $500,407 compared to last year’s record of $543,010. Win betting was up from $339,036 in 2018 to $344,418 this year but exacta wagering slipped from a record $203,974 to $155,989.
All totaled, Churchill Downs handled $1,878,359 in future wagers since November, which just missed last year’s record of $1,893,353.
