Beau Recall is the Pick 4 single at Fair Grounds on Risen Star Day
Fair Grounds plays host to a superb 12-race card on Saturday, offering six stakes races led by the $400,000 Risen Star S. (G2). A trio of Pick 4 wagers is offered on the day and I am focusing on the middle one that could come back with a very healthy return.
RACE 4: Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes
In general I am not a huge advocate of singling to commence a multi-race wager, especially with a favorite. However, sometimes the sequence dictates my actions and I must do so.
Beau Recall (#8) (2-1) was ultra-impressive in her first start for new trainer Brad Cox most recently. The Grade 2 vixen went last-to-first over a solid field and could improve in her second for these connections. The late runner will get an ample early tempo to rally into beneath Shaun Bridgmohan.
RACE 5: Maiden Special Weight
This six-furlong dash on the main oval for sophomore fillies attracts an overflow field of 14. I will go three-deep with confidence in the second leg.
Weabie (#5) (7-2) chased lone speed before tiring in late stretch as the 2-1 favorite in her January 19 debut. The $300,000 yearling purchase shows a pair of solid morning drills in the interim and retains jockey Florent Geroux.
Sister Nova (#8) (6-1) finished runner-up in each of her three tries as a juvenile at Woodbine. The Violence filly gets a barn change to Steve Asmussen for her dirt debut and she shows seven local works in advance of this one.
I will also use Istan Again (#12) (12-1), as the first timer from the dangerous Larry Jones barn could show big early speed beneath Sophie Doyle.
RACE 6: Maiden Special Weight
A huge field with a pair of also-eligible entries will vie in this turf test. I don’t see a way to find a single in the contest and will spread out expecting for a price.
Twelfth Labour (#10) (5-1) is my top play from the Dallas Stewart shedrow. The Quality Road colt has faltered while well-backed in two straight on the dirt at Fair Grounds, and he moves forward here with the surface change.
I also have interest in Whata Perfect Day (#2) (8-1), Dynamic Force (#3) (10-1), Gentle Warrior (#5) (12-1), Please Sit Down (#7) (7-2) and Mr. Mike (#12) (12-1), the latter of whom has three turf-winning siblings and makes his grassy debut in this spot.
RACE 7: Maiden Special Weight
A full field of sophomores will go 1 1/16 miles in this maiden special weight test. It is a demanding closing leg with many of the top contenders drawing wide in the two-turn event.
Awesome Wok N Roll (#2) (5-1) makes his dirt debut and must be included for trainer Mark Casse. The Awesome Again colt is my narrow top selection.
Cogan (#4) (12-1), Free Speech (#9) (5-1), Golden Tiger (#10) (8-1), Tapit Wise (#11) (9-2) and By My Standards (#12) (7-2) are also on the ticket.
Suggested .50-cent Pick-4
8 with 5,8,12 with 2,3,5,7,10,12 with 2,4,9,10,11,12 = $54
Good Luck!
