Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Monday, June 1
Laurel Park, Race 7: Maiden special weight (1 1/16 miles on turf, 3:40 p.m. ET)
#6 Maryland Mo (6-1 on the morning line) appears well spotted for his second start. Sold for $200,000 as a yearling, the son of Uncle Mo raced greenly in his debut Oct. 3 at Laurel, but managed to finish third in a 1-mile waiver maiden claiming race over the main track.
Trainer Graham Motion will transition Maryland Mo from dirt to turf for Monday’s test, a move that should produce improvement. Uncle Mo sires 14% winners from first-time turf runners, and Maryland Mo’s dam — the Cozzene mare Who’s Cozy — has produced four winners on grass from six starters.
At 6-1, Maryland Mo is worth playing, on the hunch he will relish the surface switch.
Let’s bet Maryland Mo to win and play him under “ALL” in the exacta, an $11 ticket pending scratches.
$14 to win on #6 Maryland Mo
$1 exacta: ALL with 6 ($11)
Total: $25
Good luck!
