Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Monday, June 22
Delaware Park, Race 4: Maiden special weight (1 mile on turf, 2:45 p.m. ET)
#9 Bold Quest (5-1 on the morning line) is on the rise for hot trainer Phil Schoenthal, a 20% winner this year. After he finished fourth in his Feb. 21 debut on dirt, behind next-out allowance winner Toy, Bold Quest switched to turf for a 1 1/16-mile event at Laurel on June 1 and rallied strongly down the lane to finish second, beaten 2 1/2 lengths by the promising Maryland Mo.
This performance earned Bold Quest a solid 89 Brisnet Late Pace rating, one of the highest numbers in Monday’s field. Regular rider Jevian Toledo (a 20% winner on turf) stays aboard, and facing a large field should ensure Bold Quest receives plenty of pace to chase in his second start off a three-month layoff.
Let’s bet Bold Quest to win and key him in a couple of small exactas, with #12 Galilean Moon (15-1), who will try turf after a runner-up effort on dirt at Laurel, and #13 Palace Kitten (5-2), a speedy son of Kitten’s Joy unfortunately saddled with a tricky wide draw.
$10 to win on #9 Bold Quest
$4 exacta: 12,13 with 9 ($8)
$1 exacta: 9 with 12,13 ($2)
Total: $20
Good luck!
