Weekday picks and plays for Thoroughbred racing.
Thursday, Oct. 1
Belmont Park, Race 8: Joseph A. Gimma S. (7 furlongs, 4:47 p.m. ET)
In terms of Brisnet Speed ratings, #1 Infringement (5-1 on the morning line) is the slowest filly in this 7-furlong dash for New York-bred juvenile fillies. But the daughter of Temple City has run a couple of admirable races under adverse circumstances.
In her debut sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs at Belmont, Infringement raced greenly down the homestretch, but nevertheless ran down the pacesetter to win in determined fashion. Then, in the 6 1/2-furlong Seeking the Ante S. at Saratoga, Infringement stumbled badly at the start, but rallied from last place to finish third.

Infringement showed tactical speed in her first start, and assuming she breaks cleanly Thursday, a return to forwardly placed tactics should be in the offing.
Trainer Mark Hennig has been hot at Belmont (3-for-10 to start the meet), and jockey Jose Lezcano has likewise been on fire, with a 22% strike rate.
At 5-1, we’ll take a shot betting Infringement to win and call it a day.
