Presque Isle Downs, Race 2: Maiden special weight (5 1/2 furlongs on Tapeta, 5:10 p.m. ET)
This competitive sprint for 2-year-old fillies has attracted a deep and competitive field, with seven first-time starters in the mix. Among the most intriguing is #6 Do You Love Me (8-1), a daughter of English Channel out of a Tiznow mare.
Do You Love Me isn’t bred to be an early-maturing type, but she’s flashed serious speed during morning workouts at Presque Isle Downs. On Aug. 13 she blazed a bullet half-mile in :47 1/5 from the starting gate, and she followed up with 5 furlongs in :59 1/5 on Aug. 21.
Trainer John Bourke wins at a solid 16% rate with horses debuting in maiden special weights, so there are reasons to believe Do You Love Me will outrun her pedigree on debut. Veteran jockey Mario Pino takes the mount, so let’s box Do You Love Me in the exacta with #7 Game Theory (5-2) and #8 She’sanearthmover (9-2).
