Betting Super High 5 carryovers at Gulfstream and Turfway

January 29th, 2022

Handicapper J. Keeler Johnson analyzes a pair of Saturday Super High 5 carryovers at Gulfstream Park and Turfway Park.

Gulfstream Park, Race 1: $2,891 Super High 5 carryover (11:30 a.m. ET)

Pegasus World Cup day at Gulfstream Park kicks off with a $2,891 carryover in the $1 Super High 5. The race involved is a tricky one—a $16,000 starter handicap for older horses racing 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta.

The morning line favorite is #4 Yamato (7-2), a graded stakes-experienced five-year-old who won a $16,000 starter allowance racing 1 1/16 miles over this track on Dec. 26. But Yamato arguably capitalized on rallying into a solid pace, as the race was dominated by closers. Yamato’s margin of victory was just three-quarters of a length over #1 Light Fury (5-1), who stayed closer to the early tempo, so a case can be made for Light Fury to turn the tables while breaking from the rail on Saturday.

If we count on Light Fury and Yamato to run 1-2 (an admittedly bold play), we can spread deeper underneath and still play the Super High 5 on a semi-reasonable budget.

Turfway Park, Race 8: $5,929 Super High 5 carryover (9:46 p.m. ET)

Racing was canceled on Friday at Turfway Park, but Saturday’s card is expected to proceed as scheduled with a $5,929 carryover up for grabs in the $1 Super High 5.

To earn a share of the prize pool, you’ll have to decipher Race 8, a $5,000 claimer for fillies and mares who have never won two races. The distance is a mile on Tapeta, and the conditions figure to favor #4 Paulas Game (7-2).

Paulas Game has cracked the trifecta in two straight starts over this track and distance. After rallying wide to finish third over this class level on Dec. 26, Paulas Game finished third again while stepping up to the $7,500 claiming level, beaten only 1 3/4 lengths.

Paulas Game consistently puts up competitive Brisnet Speed ratings and retains the services of Turfway’s leading rider, Gerardo Correlas. Drawing an inside post affords Paulas Game an opportunity to save some ground, so she’s worth keying on top while emphasizing the similarly consistent #12 Machisima (4-1) and the class-dropping #7 Europa (4-1) underneath.

  • $1 Super High 5: 4 with 7,12 with 7,12 with 2,5,9,10 with 2,3,5,9,10 ($32)
  • $1 Super High 5: 4 with 7,12 with 2,5,9,10 with 7,12 with 2,3,5,9,10 ($32)
    Total: $64

Good luck!
