Blizzard, Snowshoe Series Continue In Canada; Ovals On Fire In The Deep Freeze Promise Pulp Prices

Our selected features continue covering Woodbine-Mohawk (WoMo) winter pacing series with the second legs of the Blizzard (fillies and mares) and the Snowshoe (colts and horses). More and more horses are added to the weekly H2W (horses-to-watch) list during the early season, so check out the offerings of valuable favorites and double-digit outsiders that complement any wagers you target. Consult the H2W for all of your harness action. BLIZZARD FORECAST At WoMo on Thursday, Jan. 24, the Blizzard Series presents leg two for fillies-and-mares pacers with two more $17,000 divisions. In the second leg’s first division only six get behind the gate. The public should back last week’s winner, Protect Blue Chip, who was not their choice. She will be totally over-valued here if she becomes the favorite. One of the early-speed gals from last week beaten by Protect Blue Chip also returns. Shes On A Roll was 10-1, losing the lead late and finishing sixth by 4 lengths. Racing this week with some cover or in the catbird seat would give her a better chance, or, perhaps this week she goes wire to wire. A good price for a six-horse field, though, is most probable. There are also only six in division two. There is a pair of beaten favorites from last week’s two divisions in this small group. Lyons Hedgeabet should get public support again and Sand Artist will challenge for the top betting status. Next in line for public fancy is last week’s other Blizzard winner, Springbridgevision, One of our contenders last week, Persistant Xample, is also among the six and gets our support again for price and purpose. “Xample” ate up a lot of ground from the 12 lengths she gave up to the leader leaving the gate. She finished fourth by 3 lengths at 12-1, with two calls on the outside. Her return to the series among the limited number of those returning from leg one is a positive move and with the aforementioned three taking most of the money, Xample will offer more to pay than her chances indicate. POWER PLAYS Meadows / Race 11 Friday, Jan. 25 Two outside contenders from a Power Plays race last week return in this conditioned event and they both look good again, raring to take part in exotics, hopefully at decent prices. Mykonos (5-2) lost steam from fiery three-quarters that gained him 7 lengths to be the leader. Unfortunately, it was an overland trip and three others saving ground along the way beat him. Deserving another shot, he may go off at better odds, though 5-2 is still fair. From that same race comes Uncle Hal. At 6-1, an unusually high price while guided by Meadows hero reinsman Dave Palone, this pacer took the lead at once and retreated as Mykonos attacked through three-quarters. In deeper spots for exotics, adding a two-time H2W loser, Goingtocalifornia, could help, along with Rocknroll Charm, a Ron Burke season debut (with Palone). Those four could produce good coin, so to speak. SNOWSHOE STOMP Only two divisions on Friday, Jan. 25 make up leg two of the Snowshoe Series for three- and four-year-old colt pacers, with the purses still $17,000. Eleven make up division one, with two of our contenders returning from last week’s leg. One of them is Kenny Joe. At 4-1, “Joe” jumped after a big brush getting him to the lead. He was eliminated. Staying on gait, he could sustain his stride to win here. The other back from our support is Marc Mellow Man. He was 3-1, checking in third to the race favorite, Legal Bettor, who is also in this crowd and may be the public choice. “Marc” will have a say in the finish and if he wins it will be a close one but his odds will be worth the backing. In division two there is another 11-horse field. Barbados, R Bazingga and Ron Eom hit the board last week. Only Ron Eom was not a favorite and only Ron Eom won from the trio. Only one of our choices returns from leg one—Somehowsomeday. He was 8-1 and made one big move that gained him ground. Though finishing sixth he was only 2 ¾ lengths behind the 11-1 winner, Howmac Diamond, also in this field. Too much speed could give Somehowsomeday a great chance to upset and that is the scenario we endorse. FEATURES^FEATURES^FEATURES Northfield / R11 Saturday, Jan. 26 In a Power Plays race on Jan. 12, we offered two contenders. The stronger of the two, Miss Meeko, scratched. In this event she has drawn well and demands attention. Miss Meeko steps up after two wins for a lower tag and the week off from the scratch (no indication of injury or illness was reported). Her performance is not likely to be bothered by the $3,000 added to her claiming price. This is her first race of the season and the only way she gets bet heavily is if Aaron Merriman picks up the drive. Even Aaron believes he is the reason so many of his drives receive wild support, so that could hurt the price here. He is listed (at press time) on two other horses, so maybe the bettor gets lucky and he goes with one of those. FEATURES^FEATURES^FEATURES Northfield / R15 Saturday, Jan. 26 Given a week’s rest due to Winter Storm Harper when Northfield cancelled the entire Jan. 19 program, two of our contenders return in this race from posts 1 and 2. Last time racing, Shakeitformegear (67-1) made a bold but futile attempt from post 8 to gain enough ground to make a difference, which it did not. A huge favorite won that race easily but Shakeitformegear showed a lot of energy with the move to put him in contention here. As well, Wonderful World returns after a giant mile at 7-2, racing from the second tier, which included a strong brush and a late gain. More public support for Wonderful World is expected here, starting from post 1. These two would combine for a monstrous exacta, no less pumping up any prices for a triple. H2W Legend Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track. These are possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races. The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means it is appearing on the list for the second (and last) time because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” signals the horse is entered on the also-eligible list. If a horse is listed twice, refer to the entries on the night of the race since a horse may enter in more than one race.
