Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf 2018 Pedigree Profiles

ANTHONY VAN DYCK is by the legendary Galileo. His dam is the Exceed and Excel mare Believe’n’succeed, making him a half-brother to New Zealand champion sprinter and Group 1 winner Bounding. Galileo does extremely well with fast mares, and Exceed and Excel is a son of Danehill, whose mares cross even better with Galileo.

ARTHUR KITT is by Camelot, who just missed sweeping the 2012 English Triple Crown by three parts of a length. The stallion is off to a great start at stud, with winners of the Irish Derby (Ire-G1) and Belmont Oaks Invitational (G1) as well as four other group scorers. Arthur Kitt’s dam, the Red Clubs mare Ceiling Kitty, was a Group 2 winner as a two-year-old in England. Her first foal is a stakes winner on the turf going six furlongs.

BROOME is by Australia, one of the best bred turf stallions out there, being sired by Galileo out of the great mare Ouija Board. This is his first crop to race and he has a Group 2 winner already. Broome’s dam, the Acclamation mare Sweepstake, won her first two career starts on the turf at two before coming back at three to run third in the Appalachian Stakes (G3) at Keeneland going two turns. Her record as a broodmare is spotty since she has been bred to top stallions and not done much.

CURRENT is by Curlin, who sires 12 percent turf winners. Current’s dam, Crosswinds, is by Storm Cat (17 percent turf winners) and she has produced a Grade 1 winner on dirt. She is a daughter of Kentucky Oaks (G1) heroine Flute but she has been a disappointment as a broodmare. The genes are here and maybe an outcross sire will bring out the best.

FORTY UNDER is by Uncle Mo, who sires 15 percent turf winners. Forty Under’s dam is the Black Tie Affair mare Argent Affair, a minor stakes winner of $154,000 in earnings. She was stakes-placed in her lone turf start going 5 1/2 furlongs, and her first foal mostly raced on the synthetic Tapeta at Presque Isle Downs.

HENLEY’S JOY is by superstar turf sire Kitten’s Joy, who is the leading turf sire in America. The colt’s dam is the Bluegrass Cat mare Blue Grass Music, a two-time winner on the turf in 21 grass starts whose first foal to race placed in England on turf. There is not much black-type under the second dam.

KING OF SPEED is by Jimmy Creed, who is off to a great start at stud with 56 winners from two crops to race, seven stakes winners and an above average 14 percent turf winners. This colt sold for $140,000 as a yearling and his dam, the A.P. Indy mare Beautiful Daniele, won four times on the turf including a stakes win going a mile. Her first four foals have not done much despite being by decent stallions.

LINE OF DUTY is by the legendary Galileo and his dam is the Rock of Gibraltar mare Jacqueline Quest. That mare won on the turf at two and came back as a sophomore to run second in the 1,000 Guineas (Eng-G1) going the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) distance of a mile. Jacqueline Quest was bred to Galileo the first four times in the breeding shed and produced a listed-placed three-year-old in Ireland.

MARIE’S DIAMOND is by Footstepsinthesand, who has had 11 crops to race and multiple champions in both hemispheres. Marie’s Diamond’s dam is the Kalanisi mare Sindiyma, who won second time out on the turf going 1 1/2 miles. She has produced Sikandarabad, who was third in an Australian Group 1 on the turf.

OPRY is by new sire Declaration of War, who is off to a strong start at stud with 60 winners and six stakes winners including a Group 1 classic winner in France going this distance. His dam, the Canadian stakes-placed That Voodoo Youdo, is by Speightstown (14 percent turf winners). She has produced a multiple stakes-placed winner of $134,000 and is a half-sister to White Cat, a Grade 3 winner on the turf at Keeneland.

SOMELIKEITHOTBROWN is by Big Brown, who sires 12 percent turf winners. Big Brown romped in his career debut on turf and has sired 26 stakes winners from seven crops to race. Somelikeithotbrown’s dam, Marilyn Monroan, is by Tapit (13 percent turf winners) and was winless on track, while his second dam, the Belong to Me mare Summer Scene, has no black-type credit.

THE BLACK ALBUM is by Wooten Bassett, who has only had 88 foals from four crops to race but has sired Almanzor, who won three Group 1 races on turf and was a French, Irish and European highweight two years ago. The Black Album’s dam, the Trade Fair mare Model Black, won twice on the turf in France and is a half-sister to dual Group 2 victor Trumpet Major.

UNCLE BENNY is by Declaration of War and out of the unraced Storm Cat (17 percent turf winners) mare Celebrity Cat, who has produced one other turf winner. She is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Starrer, who racked up more than $1 million on track but never raced on the turf.

WAR OF WILL is by super turf sire War Front (17 percent turf winners), who has already sired a winner of this race in 2015 victor Hit It a Bomb. War of Will’s dam is the Sadler’s Wells (73 individual Group 1 winners) mare Visions of Clarity, who won a listed race on the turf in France and has already produced Irish Group 1 winner Pathfork. The mare is also a half-sister to Spinning World, who won the 1997 edition of the Breeders’ Cup Mile (G1) after placing second one year prior.
