Buffalo Scores At $79, $21; Exacta Run; Feature Overlays

 
Thursday, Feb. 6

Freehold yielded a win with a fair price for our suggested contender, Stick That Lip Out ($6.20, $2.60, $2.10). We almost hit a cold exacta but our second choice to cash that bet—Belladonna Zette ($3.20)—came in third

At Yonkers our second choice, the favorite Getting Messi ($3.00, $2.40, $2.10) ruined our big exotic prices by winning over our third choice, Full Rights ($3.30), who finished third. Mocedes Boy (74-1), the upset contender, finished seventh.


Friday, Feb. 7

We aimed for a strong-paying Yonkers Daily Double (DD) to open the evening and went one for two. The first half of the DD, our win bet was Steve Said ($10.40, $5.40, $4.00). The second leg of the DD was won by the favorite, while our money-promising choice, Armbro Courage N (43-1), finished fifth.


Saturday, Feb. 8

Pocono Downs opened with a big program. Aside from some H2W choices, we looked for four good plays as features.

We posted the incorrect race for the one winner in the four races we highlighted, though we know our readers check for errors when they pay attention to horses we suggest. Our winner, Cheyenne Reijean ($13.80, $6.00, $3.60), was the longest price of the other features, which were each won by one of the public’s first three choices.

We finished fifth with Heartbeat Hill (98-1); sixth with Winning Gene (25-1); and seventh with BJs Guy (16-1).

Sunday, Feb. 9 features results—Wallywold IV from Pompano—will appear in next week’s Update edition.
 

H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 53 active horses (a 8-percent win hit rate and a 32-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate).

Richard Moreau took home his seventh-consecutive title as Canada’s Trainer of the Year. Campbellville-based trainer Luc Blais, the runner-up in that category, had a major coup as his trainee, Forbidden Trade (Hambletonian winner), took divisional honors in the Three-Year-Old Trotting Colt category as well as the coveted award, the Somebeachsomewhere Horse of the Year.

Coming off another strong season, driver Louis-Philippe Roy recorded amazing numbers in 2019 to earn him Canada's Driver of the Year award. It is his second consecutive award in the category. Roy, a native of Mont-Joli, Que. resides in Guelph, Ont. Only five years ago, Roy drove at Quebec Fairs. His ascent in the driver ranks is unprecedented. Roy’s 2019 win reflected his 293 wins and more than $6.2 million in earnings. That was the second best in Canada. He’s surpassed $5 million in earnings for the past three seasons.

Bruce Kearns, businessman, breeder and friend, passed away at 81 on Feb. 2. Mr. Kearns’ bred and owned Backstreet Guy, a winner of $754,573 and 1989 Peter Haughton Memorial champion. Kearns founded Forum Communications Group, Ltd., which published the enormously successful “Physical Therapy Forum.”  He was a shareholder in TIMES: in harness and supported, by sponsoring, the first Internet radio talk show, Cotolo Chronicles, with his Short Stop Jeans product. He wrote a novel, The Resurrection of the King, speculating Elvis Presley’s death.
