Camluck Classic Launches Stakes Weekend; PA All Stars Pace For Profit; Canada Hosts Top Sophs, Aged Stars

This week we heat up along with the temperatures as June opens with a serious focus on glamour boys who pace and trot. We’re heading to Canada for “Cup” prepping and an older group for the Camluck Classic. The trot sophs are wailing in the Hambletonian Trail blog, so betting opportunities are aplenty with TwinSpires harness bettors.
For more live horses at more harness meets than any other website offers, the TwinSpires horses-to-watch (H2W) list thrives so far this season, suggesting horses for bettors to use in any wagers. You best pay attention to horses on the list. Do your own handicapping and then consider our H2W selections.
CAMLUCK CLASSIC
Friday at Western Fair, older pacers try to beat Confederation Cup champ Done Well in the $157,000 Camluck Classic. How the do it is not simple—they have to chase him. But an upset does not look good, because Done Well is doing better and after last week’s mile he faces a softer field than the one he just beat. Plus, watch Burke’s other pacer, Rockin Ron, fly out of the 8 hole to try for the front—which is a smart move from his starting point—and falter because of it, which will only help Done Well.
Only Sintra could pull off a win and he still needs a good trip. Considering the dominance of Done Well in the win pool, Sintra will be a good outsider to make Done Well not do well.
SOMECOLTSSOMEWHERE
Two $80,000 divisions for glamour-boy pacers are featured on the Woodbine/Mohawk (WoMo) program for Saturday, June 1; it’s the start of a stakes stream for the division this season. The Somebeachsomewhere divisions are not short on talent, however, their performances in this prep for the North America Cup will be weighed heavily over the next few weeks,
Eight are in the first division, with the top ex-frosh of the group open for betting business. That’s Tony Alagra’s Captain Trevor. He has to deal with the “now” horse, Quatrain Blue Chip, who has been showing some strong moves winning. Also a danger is Capitano Italiano, who has been impressive at Pocono and hometown representative Better Up from Casie Coleman.
If the wagering is as tight as we predict, Captain Trevor may not dominate the betting, though perhaps he should, because that would make him a solid overlay here.
The second colt field presents a huge favorite with Coleman’s Stag Party. End of story? Though most will key the horse in exotics (because the win price will be measly), we will take a chance on an upset with Burke’s World On Edge. This guy looked good at the Meadowlands recently, like he was working his way to a big mile. This could be that mile and he may offer a great price against Coleman’s “mortal lock.”
GRADUATES GO NORTH
The trotting Graduate Series sends a batch of four-year-olds to WoMo for a $99,000 division. Ten are stomping, led by Atlanta, the mare the males are chasing. She is one of three Burke mares in the field but who will notice the two males? Not the bettors.
We would like to beat her for price and purpose with Custom Cantab. This well-bred guy has grown and may wind up a stronger aged trotter than he was at three. Last season he showed potential but could not keep up with the top tier. Chris Beaver may have a surprise contestant in the overall aged category with this one, which is why here, against only four-year-olds, he may begin to display the strength of his bloodline.
A pacing Graduate field of a dozen is a frightening handicapping chore. Cases for each of these are only outnumbered by the scenarios one could work up for any of them winning.
Look at this field, which includes Courtly Choice, Lather Up, Dorsoduro Hanover and others that know each other very well from sophomore battles. Plus, “Levy” co-stars Jimmy Freight and The Downtown Bus, add to the traffic, where you will also find Thinkbig Dreambig, Captain Deo and This Is The Plan.
With concern, we will give Dorsoduro Hanover the call because he may get a perfect trip, which he did not last week when he took third in the Confederation Cup. The winner of that, Done Well, is not in this field (see above for Camluck Classic). Some he beat, though, are here, and he beat them with a tougher trip. He was 4-1 last week and should be higher here.
ALL STARS AGAIN
PA All Stars for the soph-filly pace division have four rounds on Saturday, June 1 at Pocono. Each split is worth $30,000.
Seven go in round one with Abigail Dawn leading the pack. Though she is currently the best, her price will be less than slim. We look to Alii Nui, in only her fourth mile of the season, to tip a trip that will pay off well.
The second seven are set for a battle, barring the exceptional rate that favorites win stakes at Pocono. A bet-back shot for some money here is Louphoria. Last we saw her she was no money magnet but the well-bred soph has not proven to be hopeless and Ron Burke keeps her cashing checks, so go with the price.
Third on the All-Stars quartet is another seven-filly field, led by Pretty N Fast, another Burke-barn product. However, Chris Ryder’s Stonebridge Soul has been a good earner so far and this is only her fourth race. She will be a good price with a good chance to win over Burke’s filly and Sweet Heaven, an obvious co-choice for the public.
Last of the All-Star group is another seven filly fray featuring the division’s early darling, Warrawee Ubeaut. She will be hammered heavily for Burke. You could key her but if you want some good paying exotics, do not use the undefeated Philly Hanover or Annie Hill. An exacta demands Able Hanover second, though with the right circumstances she could upset the anointed champion.
H2W Legend
Review our choices and follow the wagering at the prescribed track. These are possible contenders we have judged from reviewing races. The horses’ names are listed beneath the name of the track after the date they will be racing. The race in which they are entered (R and race number) follows. If a + is in front of a horse’s name it means it is appearing on the list for the second (and last) time because it failed to win the first time it appeared. An “ae” signals the horse is entered on the also-eligible list. If a horse is listed twice, refer to the entries on the night of the race since a horse may enter in more than one race. Types of wagering on any of the H2W listed horses are based on your judgment. If you have any questions, email us at TwinSpires.
