Carryover provision in new Australia Pick 7 could produce massive windfalls

A new Pick 7 wager that will be introduced on Australian racing Friday night (U.S. time) has the potential to produce a monster windfall to one or more bettors that can successfully navigate the typically deep waters (and fields) of the sport Down Under.

Offered at a 20-cent minimum per combination, the Pick 7 will have a 100% carryover into the next night's card if not hit. The wager will be offered every night of the week at a track to be determined and will typically incorporate the final seven races of a card.

Generally large fields will make "buying" the wager cumbersome (it would take a $3 million-plus investment on Friday), so clever handicapping is a must along with plenty of luck. The first Pick 7 pool, on the Spring Champions Stakes Day card at Randwick, will offer a $10,000 guarantee.

The eponymous feature is the Spring Champion (G1) for 3-year-olds over 1 1/4 miles, which goes as Race 7 at 1:50 a.m. Over ground currently listed as "Good 4," #1 CHERRY TORTONI (11-2) looks like a must-use.

A gelded son of Night of Thunder, Cherry Tortoni won all three starts at age two. Though he dropped his first two starts of the season last month, he's seemingly been building up to peak in this more prestigious event. Out of a half-sister to Spring Champion winner Tie the Knot, he definitely has the pedigree to succeed as well as improving speed ratings.

Cherry Tortoni also has a new rider for the Spring Champion in Ryan Maloney, who's won at a 28% clip in his last 50 mounts (96% in the money) and 24% with his last 350 mounts.
