Champions Day spot plays at Fair Grounds

A total of seven stakes races for Cajun-bred runners will take place on Louisiana Champions Day at Fair Grounds on Saturday. The $150,000 Classic is the topper on a big day of racing, with $750,000 in purse money on the line in the black-type events. I have highlighted four value horses of interest to me on the card that are worth a look.

Race 4 -- Maiden Special Weight

I like a lot about #1 Midnight Bayou (8-1) in the one-mile turf contest. Five-year-old has never been worse than fourth in his career and comes off pair of solid races since adding blinkers with the barn change. Bay is bred top and bottom to like the lawn, and he will also stretch out in distance for the initial time. Top pick ran well in his lone turf run to date.

Race 5 -- Lassie

Juvenile fillies will go six furlongs on the dirt in the affair. #7 Our Lost Love (6-1) was outrun early in the Louisiana Jewel at Delta Downs last time when finishing fifth, but the Half Ours lass could control things from the break today. February foal led throughout in each of her first two assignments, and I think she will do the same on Saturday.

Race 7 -- Ladies Sprint

Fillies and mares will vie in the fantastic six-furlong test. While most of the wagering will center around the pair of horses drawn to her outside, #2 Midnight Fantasy (7-2) is intriguing in the dash for Joe Sharp. Midnight Lute filly is unbeaten going one turn on the dirt without blinkers, including a 3-for-3 mark sprinting at Fair Grounds. She could be sitting on a big one off the shelf.

Race 9 -- Turf

A well-matched field will travel 1 1/16 miles in a competitive turf endeavor. Scott Geiner’s #1 In the Navy (7-2) didn’t fire in a deep field most recently at Remington but lands in a more realistic spot on this occasion. By Midshipman, the 5-year-old is a stakes winner on the course and owns the tactical speed to receive a good trip throughout under Adam Beschizza.
