Cheap-Cold Daily Double At Hoosier; McWicked Exacta Partner; ‘Ringo’ Gets Beat By Break On World Stage

 

Here are the results and some brief notes of our success and failure through the weekend:

Friday, Oct. 12

Our full-card Hoosier analysis featured the sires-stakes super finals (see other results in H2W below). There was one scratch for us—Lion Safari AS. There were no winners among the eight finals that were won by four favorites and one second choice.

We were second with Black Mamba AS ($4.60, $3.00), completing an exacta worth $15.00. Another second was Voom Or Bang ($3.60, $2.80), beaten by an 11-1 shot.

We were third with Martini Shaw ($5.80).

Remaining, in order of their appearance, Tellitsassymae (20-1) finished sixth; Sophia Lia (27-1) got fourth, as did Im A Real Ladys Man (7-1); and Skyway Quinton (85-1) finished ninth.


Saturday, Oct. 13

As it turned out, wagering on Ringostarr Teb in the Yonkers International Trot was best handicapped from Dante’s immortal quote, “All hope abandon ye who enter here.” “Ringo” was done from the start, breaking and galloping the rest of the 1 ¼ miles. To add insult to injury, the public made Ringo the favorite and a ton of legal tender from all continents submerged into the Atlantic Ocean.

Because of the elimination of the favorite and how the race configured without Ringo, a 30-1 shot blew the toteboard apart. “I was just hoping for a cover trip,” said winning trainer Marcus Melander about Cruzado Dela Noche. He got the cover trip and the Ringo break just added to the luck involved.

Northfield’s Courageous Lady was won by the public’s second choice at even money while we finished fifth with Bad Girls Rule (20-1).


BREEDERS CROWN COUNTDOWN

On Thursday, Oct. 11, the “Countdown” covered three of Yonkers top events on Saturday, Oct. 13, which were the under-card features on the Yonkers International Trot program.

We won the Harry Harvey with Warrawee Roo ($10.60, $7.10, $4.00) to start the three-race set. We lost the Open Trot with Dayson, made the 3-2 favorite by the public (not in our projection), as he finished fouth.

We could not beat McWicked but we did give him an exacta partner with Bit Of A Legend N ($3.20, n/s). The duo paid $6.90.

H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 41 active horses (a 17-percent win hit rate and a 49-percent ATB [in the money] hit rate).

News & Notes

In Oct. 11’s preview blog the headline shouting the rematch between McWicked and Lazarus N was posted before trainer Jimmy Takter reported on Twitter that Lazarus N was withdrawn from Saturdyy, Oct. 13’s Dan Rooney Invitational at Yonkers. Takter reported that the New Zealand pacer developed a cough over the past few days, prompting a scratch from one of two invitationals on the International Trot under-card. 

Northfield introduced the 20-cent Northfield Single Six, which is a unique ticket Pick 6). The bet offers a 14-percent takeout rate. The 20-cent wager is expected to offer large jackpots by carrying over 50 percent of its nightly pool until it is won with a unique single ticket. Also added this week was a second Pick 4. The early Pick 4 begins with race seven and the late Pick 4 starts in race 11. Other multi-race wagers will be shifted so that the nightly Pick 5 will begin in race two and the Pick 3 wagers will start in races five, eight and 12.

Followers of our Freshman Frolics section this season know that our confidence in first-crop sire Sweet Lou was solid. We were correct, posting a good number of his progeny in all three toteboard-lighted positions. “Lou” eventually displayed enough success to the public to have his stud fee increased. Diamond Creek Farm announced Lou’s 2019 fee will be raised to $12,500. The combined yearling sales and success of Lou’s offspring showed “exceptional value to those who supported the horse,” including Blood Money, Costello, Pyro, Lyons Nighthawk and Shes Alright. During the recent Red Mile meet, Sweet Lou filly Warrawee Ubeaut crushed a world record set by her sire.

For those curious about stud fees, Sweet Lou’s is now $12,500. By contrast, Always B Miki, also standing at Diamond Creek, has the same price, followed by Southwind Frank at $10,000. Diamond Creek also stands Father Patrick at $20,000, which is the
highest stud fee for a standardbred stallion—a tie with Cantab Hall and Walner.

Working on a comeback from a long training hiatus, Brett Pelling is slowly beginning to build a second career in his adopted homeland. While the native Australasian gets rolling, Swedish-born training star Jimmy Takter faces his final two months in North America. His storied association with top standardbred horses includes wins in four Hambletonians, six Hambletonian Oaks and 33 Breeders Crowns. From America, Takter horses shipped to win an Elitlopp and a Prix d’Amérique among others. Aside from a general retirement in his home country, Takter has made no public comment concerning career activity.
