Churchill Downs: Single 6 carryover climbs to $57,697 for Oct. 31

October 31st, 2020

Another day, another few thousand dollars added to the Single 6 carryover pool at Churchill Downs.

Following a series of logical winners on Friday, the carryover for Saturday’s card has grown to $57,697. That’s the beauty of a jackpot-style Pick 6 wager—the carryover pool keeps growing bigger and bigger until one lucky bettor assembles the lone winning ticket on a given day, triggering a potentially life-changing payoff.

Friday recap

Although only one favorite prevailed during the Friday sequence, the results were chalky overall with every winner starting at odds of 11-2 or less. Despite the generally predictable outcomes, the Single 6 returned a hefty $2,980.96 for a $0.20-cent ticket. Considering a $2 win bet parlay on the six winners would have generated just $1,520.78, that’s a pretty solid return on investment.

In fact, the payoff was so respectable that playing the top four betting favorites in every leg of the Single 6 would have produced a profitable return. I don’t recommend pursuing such a scattershot approach (the ticket would have cost $819.20), but I’m highlighting the profitability of the play to point out how even straightforward Single 6 results can produce better-than-expected payoffs.

Saturday insights

With a maximum of 56 betting interests before scratches, the Saturday sequence looks a bit tricky, but manageable on a modest budget. The critical leg might be Race 8, a 6-furlong maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies. Looming as a potential standout among the 11 entries is #8 Amusing Antics (2-1), a promising daughter of Super Saver conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott.

Amusing Antics ran too well to lose in her debut over this track and distance on Sept. 4, pressing the pace before finishing second by a head. Amusing Antics received a solid 80 Brisnet Speed rating not far off the par figure (82) for Saturday’s class and distance, and third-place finisher Lady Traveler reiterated the quality of the race by returning to break her maiden and finish second in the Rags to Riches S.

Mott strikes at a 16% rate with second-time starters, double the 8% strike rate he’s enjoyed with debut runners since 2000, so I’m optimistic Amusing Antics will take a step forward on Saturday. If there’s a single in the Single 6 sequence, Amusing Antics might be the one.

Good luck!
