Churchill Downs Spot Plays for Sept. 18
A pair of maiden sprints for juveniles and an elongated entry-level allowance are among the offerings in Churchill Downs' Late Pick 5 on Friday's card. Here are a couple horses of interest for both the multi-race and straight pools.
Race 9 -- 4:53 p.m. ET
If last month's belated maiden victory at Ellis Park by #3 DON BOURBON (5-1) proved not too taxing, he's worth a look right back in this entry-level allowance for Ian Wilkes. Although unlikely to get the off track he's twice run well over, the 9-furlong distance of this race should benefit this son of Tiznow and local Grade 2 winner Juanita, as will the potential of an honest pace involving #1 Admire and #7 Communicator, both of whom figure to be more heavily backed. Per Brisnet stats, Wilkes trainees show a flat-bet profit repeating off maiden wins the past three years.
Race 10 -- 5:26 p.m. ET
Comprised primarily of first-time starters, this 6 1/2-furlong maiden for 2-year-olds has an interesting debut candidate in #6 STARRININMYDREAMS (10-1). Although he doesn't excel with first-time starters, trainer Dallas Stewart co-bred and co-owns this Super Saver half-brother to the unlucky Louisiana-bred Saint's Fan, whom Stewart also owned and trained. Saint's Fan won on debut against open company over this track in November 2016 and went on to become a stakes winner in the Louisiana-bred ranks in an abbreviated three-race career. If this colt is anywhere as precocious as his sibling, and he might be judging by some of his August works, he could exceed pari-mutuel expectations.
