Dettori might still be on the horse to beat in 2000 Guineas

Not only is the first leg of the U.S. Triple Crown on Saturday, but so is the English equivalent. The 2000 Guineas, over a straight mile at Newmarket for colts only, has a field of 19 at this writing. Unfortunately, the size of the field is perhaps the consequence of numerous high-profile defections from the race in recent weeks, most notably Too Darn Hot and Calyx. The regular rider for both those stars, Frankie Dettori, has settled for #1 ADVERTISE (7-1), whose only career losses were caused by Calyx, in the Coventry (G2) at Royal Ascot, and Too Darn Hot, in the Dewhurst (G1). Before sticking with Too Darn Hot in the Dewhurst, Dettori guided Advertise to wins in the July (G2) at Newmarket and Phoenix (G1) at The Curragh. Although a clear second in the seven-furlong Dewhurst, there are nonetheless concerns whether Advertise wants to go a mile. However, at this price and with those imposing form lines, I'm willing to find out. There are no shortage of potential winners in this bulky field and thus seemingly many that could hit the frame. An interesting longshot for some each-way play is #6 Great Scot (20-1), a consistent son of Requinto who can move forward off his second in the Greenham (G3) to Mohaather, another colt sorely missing from this year's Guineas. Great Scot has won both starts on good ground, including a victory over eventual Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) winner Line of Duty last summer.
