Dick Powell’s Australia Pick of the Week July 10

Race 5 at Kembla Grange (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a maiden handicap for two-year-olds going five furlongs. The track is expected to be “Heavy-9” so the ground should be very tiring and who can handle it among these inexperienced runners is questionable.

#1 ELEVEN ELEVEN has shown good speed in recent starts. He flashed speed in his first start off a four-month layoff before tiring some and then came back to finish a close second at Nowra, racing over Soft turf and weakening late. Off his best effort, the son of Fastnet Rock lays over this field and he should be fit and ready with a barrier trial three weeks ago. The red-hot Keagan Latham rides back, an amazing 16 for his last 50 rides. In his first barrier trial last October, Eleven Eleven won over Heavy ground so today’s conditions should suit him.
#7 BARGUZIN makes her pari-mutuel debut for James Cummings, who has been sensational with his juveniles and seemingly every horse in his barn of late. Barguzin has had two barrier trials to prep for this and improved last out when racing over Heavy ground. Daughter of Exceed and Excel is out of a dam by Medaglia d’Oro who was stakes-placed twice and her dam won the prestigious Sires Produce Stakes (G1) at two and is a half-sister to Group 1 stakes winner Denman.
#8 BEST STONE has had three barrier trials to get ready for her pari-mutuel debut. She won last out going five furlongs on Heavy turf at Randwick for John Thompson, who has won 10 of his last 50 starts, and gets Rachel King, who has won 8 of her last 50 rides. Daughter of super sire I Am Invincible is out of a daughter of a Group 1 stakes winner who is a half-sister to a champion sprinter in South Africa. Best Stone’s pedigree and preparation says she will be ready first time out and should not mind the Heavy going.
Eleven Eleven has the advantage of having already been in races and won’t mind expected wet ground.
