Dick Powell’s Australia Pick of the Week June 19

Race 9 at Warrnambool (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a benchmark 64 handicap going seven furlongs. The track is projected to be “Heavy 9” so the ground should be extremely demanding and we will look for horses that have handled the wet going before.

#5 THEME PARK was in the money three times before receiving a freshening. He came back in a barrier trial where he just missed going four furlongs and then came back with a sharp maiden win on heavy ground at Sale. His prior form was sharp and a win like that should be followed up with a good performance on ground he handles. Son of Ocean Park has been bet in all his starts other than his first and Danny O’Brien (17% win rate for his last 350 starters) ships in from Melbourne.
#8 CONSIDERING only had three starts last season where her form was very erratic. She has a ton of back class and looked good in a six-furlong barrier trial. Usually, I would not consider using but her sire, So You Think, was a Group 1 stakes winner on bottomless ground and this mare has a win against better going 10 furlongs on Heavy ground in the past. Matt Williams has gone 7-for-50 with his recent runners as does jockey Teodore Nugent. Definitely a live longshot with the wet ground.
#1 UBER ED must tote high weight in here (136 pounds) but his recent form is very good. He ran second two starts in a row at Launceston including one on Soft ground against benchmark 72 competition. Last out, he dropped down to this handicap level and was a good second going six furlongs on Heavy ground with 130 pounds. He picks up six pounds and has no gate speed, but finishes full of run and draws well in post four with apprentice rider Harry Grace. On his best effort, Uber Ed fits with these but can he handle the weight on testing ground?
Theme Park should relish the course conditions and get the job done.
