Dick Powell’s Australia Pick of the Week June 26

Race 6 at Moe (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a benchmark 64 handicap going one mile. The track is expected to be “Heavy 8” so the ground should be extremely demanding and we will look for horses that have handled the wet going before.

#4 RED GATEAU dropped down in class here last out over “Heavy” ground and he responded with a good win when he gunned to the front from post 13 and never looked back, winning by 4 ½ lengths. Despite winning, he drops two pounds while moving up in class for Greg Hayes. He has raced at longer distances in the past so the testing ground should suit him and he is perfectly drawn in post 4. Not crazy about the rider switch.
#11 LOVIN TH’CASTLE is a lightly raced mare that gets in relatively light here. She broke her maiden here in December on “Soft” ground going this distance then came back and did nothing against this class level going nine furlongs on firmer ground. Off for five months, she returned at Geelong and rallied from way back to get second on “Heavy” ground again. She took money that day so there must have been some expectation that she would run well off the layoff.
#2 FULL OF THEORIES does not have much of a record on softer ground and he has to tote 132 pounds today. After weakening two starts back against this class level, he came back and beat cheaper going seven furlongs on a synthetic track while carrying 134 pounds. He draws the rail and has shown decent gate speed on occasion but not sure if he can overcome the wet turf. Jessica Eaton picks up the mount – 14% with her last 50 rides.
Red Gateau tries to make it two in a row and gets favorable conditions today.
