Dick Powell’s Australian Pick of the Week for August 28

Race 8 at Wagga (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a maiden special weight for older horses going six furlongs and all but the four females (who get a four-pound break in the weights) carry 130 pounds. Please note that all horses in the Southern Hemisphere had their birthday on August 1 so you will not see any more races for two-year-olds. The track is expected to be “Good 4” so it should be fair to everyone.

#10 CITY ROGUE is a lightly-raced five-year-old that can handle these with the expected improvement with a race under his belt. He was a good third in a barrier trial back in February over Good ground then returned for his pari-mutuel debut eight days ago and was a good second in a nightmare trip over Heavy ground. His speed rating fits with the best of these and he should improve on it with the ground firmer. He meets a bigger field but showed speed last out so post 10 should not be a problem. Billy Owen picks up the mount – 8-for-50 lately.
#10 WAR DECK did his best racing at the start of his career last November when he ran two straight speed ratings that would put him on top here. Last out at Wyong, he made a strong middle move to take the lead from a wide draw going a mile on Soft turf. His race two starts back was very solid going 6 ½ furlongs in good time. The son of the red-hot Declaration of War took money in his last two starts but picks up eight pounds off his last start.
#8 TRUTH BE WRITTEN showed good speed last year when he raced over firmer ground. He took money in most of his starts then went to the sidelines for seven months. Five-year-old gelding returned with two starts going five furlongs on Heavy ground and now gets another furlong over Good ground. Tyler Schiller picks up the mount (10-for-50 lately) and probably will try to send him to the front from post 13.
City Rogue should improve greatly with a race under his belt and more speed-favoring ground.
