Dick Powell’s Australian Pick of the Week for October 23

Race 4 at Hawkesbury (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a class 1 handicap going five furlongs around one right-handed 90-degree turn. The track is expected to be “Soft-5” so it is right in the middle of the ground classifications.

#1 ALL CYLINDERS has a huge edge against these in terms of performance figures. He broke his maiden in his career debut last season going this distance then came back with a good second against much better company. This season, his record is spotty, but they all came against better and he was only beaten a length two starts back with Hugh Bowman in the saddle. Last out, All Cylinders trailed in a paceless sprint and was outkicked to the wire. He picks up six pounds, but the drop in class should be enough.  

#4 VOX POPULI ran well in a barrier trial here on September 9 and came back with a good second at Rosehill. She made her pari-mutuel debut last out at Newcastle 18 days ago and was a good winner going gate to wire over a Soft turf course. She will have to improve a lot to compete with the top choice and gets Chad Lever back aboard – 10-for-50 lately.

#3 INTERRAM needed two barrier trials to get ready and the daughter of super sire Snitzel ran well each time. She came back last out at Wyong and took a lot of money before finishing 2 ¾ lengths behind in good time. Interram has some back class from last year and if she can run back to that form and her last start is a stepping stone to a better effort, she stands a chance in here. Andrew Gibbons rides back for Kim Waugh and the four-year-old mare has taken significant betting money each time she has run.
