Dick Powell’s Australian Pick of the Week for October 9

Race 2 at Wyong (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a class 1 race going 1 5/16 miles around five tight right-handed turns. Wyong is almost a circular track with five short straightaways and a decent run into the first turn. The track is expected to be “Good 4” so the ground should be fair to everyone.

#1 CANASTA is a horse for the course that broke his maiden here going 6 ¾ furlongs on a course rated Good. He came back and showed good speed going a mile before weakening then was only beaten two lengths when stretched out to 1 ¼ miles. He draws post 1 and comes back with the same weight as the one to catch around a course that reminds me of Chester in England. French-bred son of Makfi is out of an American-bred daughter of Grand Slam and she is out of a multiple Grade 1-winning dam that loved going long.  

#9 URBINO almost won two starts back as the heavy favorite going even longer than this then he came back here last out at this distance and rallied for second against maiden company. He takes off five pounds with the move up in class and gets Brent Avdulla back. British-bred son of Dansili is out of a dam by Sadler’s Wells and is a full-brother to Disclosure, who won the Newcastle Gold Cup (G3) going 1 7/16 miles.   

#8 TIME STAMP was a good second in his pari-mutuel debut going 6 ½ furlongs when he showed good speed before losing the photo on Soft turf. He came back last out at Newcastle and raced kind of flat going a mile at 5-2 odds. Now, he stretches out farther with some experience under his belt for Gai Waterhouse, who ships him north from Sydney. A gelded son of Tapit, Time Stamp is out of a dam that was a Grade 3 stakes winner. Tapit has sired three winners of the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes (G1) and this gelding should appreciated the return to firmer ground while stretching out.  

Canasta has a major pace advantage against this group and draws the rail as well.
