Dick Powell’s Australian Pick of the Week for September 11

Race 8 at Hawkesbury (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a benchmark 64 handicap for fillies and mares, three-year-olds and up, going seven furlongs around a sharp right-handed turn. The track is expected to be “Good-4” so it should be fair to everyone.

#2 MAGGIE MISS is an obvious choice as she makes her way up the career ladder. Last year at three, she weakened in a well-bet career debut and then recorded a good second on similar ground to today. Off for nine months, she returned with an even try in a barrier trial at Randwick and then won going longer. Last out here, she went gate to wire despite being roughed up to win going 5 ½ furlongs around a 90 degree turn over a Good track. Daughter of Medaglia d’Oro should have no trouble getting the added distance picking up six pounds.

#4 RENALOT broke her maiden in her second pari-mutuel start on Good ground in February. She was off for five months before returning with three even efforts against decent company on Good going. Last out, she caught a Heavy track and was beaten three lengths going a mile at Wyong 10 days ago. What attracts my eye is she will be ridden by Tommy Berry today after having Glen Boss and Nash Rawiller aboard in the previous two starts so there must have been some expectations for the daughter of Camelot.

#7 MUMMENTUM won a barrier trial on Soft turf then came back and was beaten less than two lengths in her pari-mutuel debut at 9-1. She rallied from off the pace to win her next start going away and last time against benchmark 58 handicap foes, the mare won easily as the odds-on favorite. She moves up in class for Kris Lees, who is 11 for 50 for the meet and shows a 17% win rate for the last year.

Maggie Miss might not pay much as the logical favorite but you can key her in vertical wagers.
