Dick Powell’s Australian Pick of the Week for September 25

September 24th, 2019

Race 2 at Hawkesbury (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a maiden for three-year-olds and upward going 6 ½ furlongs around a sharp right-handed turn. The track is expected to be “Soft-6” so we will lean to horses that success on ground with give to it.

#2 LIAM’S THE BOSS had a couple of barrier trials then made his career debut at Canberry going six furlongs. He experienced some traffic problems and wound up being shuffled back on the inside. Behind a runaway winner, he rallied boldly to get second at 15-1 in fast time on a course listed as Soft. Out of a dam by the great Galileo, the son of The Factor has plenty of pedigree and should get a clear trip from post 8. Liam’s the Boss picks up four pounds and is trained at Hawkesbury by Brad Widdup, who is seven for 50 of late with a 15% win rate from his last 350 starters.

#1 BEAURAMA returned off a year’s layoff and won a barrier trial on heavy ground going 4 ½ furlongs. He came back here going 5 ½ furlongs and tired late after disputing the early pace on Heavy ground, and returns here three months later for the Prices. In a major rider upgrade, he picks up Tommy Berry (10 for 50 lately and an overall 18% win rider) so the anticipation must be that he is ready off the layoff.

#5 FOXY ROCKET has the most experience with eight pari-mutuel starts. He has finished in the money on softer ground and comes back 13 days later after after rallying hard for second over the course and distance on Good turf. The son of Foxwedge has some low-percentage connections so we’ll see if his recent form can be improved on. Based on superior speed ratings and only carrying 122 pounds, Foxy Rocket figures to rally to get a piece of this.

Liam’s the Boss can handle these if he shows the usual improvement second-time starters do.
