Dick Powell’s Australian Pick of the Week March 20, 2019

March 19th, 2019

Race 5 at Australia A (Newcastle) Wednesday night is a terrific maiden race for two-year-olds going seven furlongs. A field of 14 are entered and the ground is expected to be “Good.” FREE International Past Performances every day at Brisnet.com! #13 AMITTO is a first-time starter from James Cummings, who is having another sensational year with his two-year-olds. Amitto’s barrier trial is hard to judge since it came on soft turf and there were only three horses in it. Still, she was only beaten 1 ½ lengths, with Hugh Bowman aboard, and Cummings uses these events as building blocks to get ready. In my mind, the fact that he is bringing her to the races and not given her another trial is a sign of confidence. The daughter of Lonhro is out of a dam that won the Schweppes Oaks (G1) and shipped to America to run third in the American Oaks (G1) at Hollywood Park. #1 BULLET FLY is the one to beat but might be overbet. She had two trials last year and another pair this year to prep for her debut. In a 13-runner field going six furlongs, she rallied for third in good time while racing wide. Last out at Newcastle, she showed much better speed from post 12 and pressed a slow pace to hold for second going seven furlongs. Tommy Berry picks up the mount for Peter Snowden but will have to break sharp from post 2. #9 SIGNIFICANCE is a first-time starter from John O’Shea who has had two strong trials for this. He draws post 3 and gets Sam Clipperton, who had been the regular rider of Bullet Fly. The big thing with Significance is that he is a son of the mighty Frankel and out of an unraced daughter of a winner of three Group 1 stakes races and a second in the Arc de Triomphe (G1). Plenty of pedigree and Frankel is off to a great start at stud. Amitto has the connections and pedigree to win first time up. Godolphin juveniles have been doing great under James Cummings leadership and we like the 6/1 morning line. ***Don’t forget TwinSpires.com’s Australian Racing Bet Back offer where you can receive up to $5 back on your first win bet if your horse finishes second This offer is valid on Australian A tracks Monday through Thursday if you opt in and play at least four races on a single day using the new TwinSpires platform There is a maximum bonus of $50 per player each week
