Dick Powell’s Australian Pick of the Week May 22

May 21st, 2019

Race 2 at Hawkesbury (Australia A) on Wednesday night is a 1 1/8-mile maiden race. The track is expected to be “Good-4” so the ground should be pretty neutral. After a four-month rest, she came back with a good barrier trial at Rosehill and then showed good speed in an even effort going 7 ½ furlongs at Kembla Grange. Last out at Newcastle, Elleofadeal pressed a slowish pace in a wide trip from post 11 while hanging on for second. Now, the daughter of Dundeel draws inside on the stretch out and is bred to go long as her sire won six Group 1 stakes going middle distances and like many High Chaparral-line horses, appreciates firm ground. #2 AURMAN ZOU has had many chances but many of them came sprinting. Last out, he stretched out to this distance here and was a good third carrying this weight. He draws the same post and there’s no reason that he can’t come back and run a similar race. His other best race came going a mile for Chris Waller who also trains the top choice. Aurman Zou has dangerous early speed and last time out going this distance, he was able to stall the first six furlongs before flying home in :34 and change for the last three furlongs. #5 ROYAL ANTHEM is still a maiden after 12 tries but has nine placings so she is ultra-consistent. Two starts back, she rallied for second going a mile then rallied some last out after breaking slowly and running into traffic problems. Four-year-old mare doesn’t get much of a weight break in here but I like how she was a good second from way back in her lone start going this distance. Elleofadeal is a lightly-raced filly that appears to still have upside.
