Double-Digit Harness Winners East To West

Thursday, Jan. 9

At Flamboro we mistakenly placed one of our picks in Race 4 when it was in Race 2. Twice An Angel ($4.10, $2.30, $2.10) won Race 2. Our choice in Race 4, however, Motor Dame (7-2), finished fourth.

A favorite won Race 10, disappointing our projected big prices across the board and in exotics. None of our trio in this race performed well. Cabernet (5-2) finished fourth, Credit To Burn (20-1) came home seventh, and Bette Mittler (34-1) checked in ninth.


Friday, Jan. 10

Our choices for three features at the Meadows presented only one appearance on the toteboard. Beach House ($3.60) finished third.

In Race 10, RN Nate (5-1) raced about as well as possible but could only finish fourth. That was as good as it got for most of the field as a 26-1 winner shook the toteboard.

In Race 13, a 7-1 shot defeated our choice, Beachesbeckonme (32-1), who was a total disappointment, finishing eighth.


Saturday, Jan. 11

Yonkers is rolling again, so we picked three races on the lucrative weekend program for action.

Unfortunately, our first feature contained a scratch for our contender, Buen Camino.

In Race 6 a 6-1 shot beat both of our contenders, though coming in third was Hill Of A Horse ($8.80). Trotting Grace (14-1) finished fourth. Two of the four were contributed to the $4,566.00 superfecta.

Herehecomesarockin (14-1) made one strong move and gave in to finish sixth in our other feature.


H2W LIST RESULTS

The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 37 active horses (a 19-percent win hit rate and a 49-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate).

News & Notes

Trainer Nick Surick’s pacers and trotters always gets industry attention at Freehold, as he continues to be the trainer. In the early going of 2020, Surick is sending out more than one horse in some races, using leading driver Andy Miller, mostly. Four Surick horses won of the seven he sent to post on Jan. 9. On Jan. 10, two of 11 won. What makes those two days an anomaly are two of the winners. One paid $17.40 and another paid $24.00. Those two prices made Surick a flat-bet profit in those 18 races. Usually, betting Surick entries, especially with Miller in the bike, often comes up short for a profit.

Jason Bartlett’s five-bagger at Yonkers on Jan. 7 was a flat-bet loss for bettors. Jason raced in all 12 of the program’s races, His five winners were all heavily played, with a high price of $4.50. The total for playing every Bartlett drive that evening cost $24. The return on that investment was $17.90, a lost of $2.10.

Trainer MarcusMelander has been voted Trainer of the Year for 2019. His top horses were covered a lot in the TwinSpires harness blog. There was Greenshoe,who won 10 of 13 races, finished second in three of his losses, and earned $1.27 million to top all trotters. Our favorite was Gimpanzee, who won the division’s Breeders Crown event. He won eight of 14 starts and $1.12 million. The third powerhouse was Green Manalishi S, who won six of 13 races and $646,838. Melander became only the second trainer to have two $1-million-earning trotters in the same division in the same season, joining JimmyTakter, who accomplished the feat in 2014 with Father Patrick and Nuncio.

Caviart Ally, 2019 Breeders Crown mare pace champion, will return to racing this season according to owners Buck and Judy Chaffee of Caviart Farms. The mare, who became Shartin N’s greatest foe during 2019 and finally began catching her late in the season, is being pointed to the lucrative Blue Chip Matchmaker Series in mid-March at Yonkers. Caviart Ally’s trainer, Brett Pelling said he is looking forward to her performances in 2020. “She’s at the top of her game,” he said, and he thought the Matchmaker would be a perfect fit for her.
