Dover Downs offers another solid Thursday card
One week after it hosted the last major stakes race for three-year-iold colt pacers on the calendar, Dover Downs offered a solid card filled with over night races and presented while many local racegoers were watching with a heavy heart.
Longtime Dover Downs publicist and Hall of Famer Marv Bachrad passed away at the age of 82 last weekend and many horsemen and onlookers must have sensed that the genuine professional was still watching the card from the press box up above. Bachrad set the standard for publicity directors in the sport and his sudden passing left a giant void at Dover Downs and throughout the industry.
In the featured $25,000 Open, Daiymir (Montrell Teague) benefited from patient handling and a pocket trip to prevail over pacesetter Sicily (Victor Kirby) in 1:51.2 for trainer George Teague, Jr. One race earlier on the card in the secondary Winners Over class, Sweet Rock (Tim Tetrick) forged a mild 5-1 upset when he overhauled favored Penzance Hanover (Art Stafford, Jr.) late in 1:50.4.
Other overnight winners on the card included Transitioning Joy (Teague) in 1:52.2, Dialamara (Jason Lynch) nailed favored Mel Mara (Corey Callahan) late in 1:50.3, while Highland Beach Boy (Kirby) and Wager On Me (Mike Cole) scored in overnight races for younger horses that could potentially end up in the Open at some point. Wager On Me is a juvenile son of Bettor's Delight who beat older rivals easily in 1:52.4 and appears to have a bright future.
This weekend racing fans will have ample wagering opportunities in competitive overnight races at Yonkers Raceway in New York, Rosecroft Raceway in Maryland and Pompano Park in Florida.
Saturday night's card at Yonkers is highlighted by the $44,000 Open Handicap for older pacers and a $35,000 3-4-Year-Old Open and also includes a split non-winners of $30,000 last five condition where railbound pacers Caviart Luca (race 7) and The Real One (race 10) should be able to find the winner's circle.
Then on Sunday evening at Rosecroft Raceway, a solid field will clash in the $12,500 Maryland Open as Kiss A Dragon, All The Cookies, Sams Triple Crown and Hickory Aloha meet again. There is also a Winners Over trot early and a split non-winners of $4,000 last five class for pacers.
That same evening at Pompano Park, Panocchio headlines the $10,000 Open I against Prairie Panther, Casimir Richie P and Dakota Jack and another solid group tangles later in the $9,000 Open II with Casimir Quasimodo, Feelin Like A Winner, Uncomrpmising Z Tam and Andreois Kardia who has rocketed through the condition ranks and looms a major player despite post nine.
