Dover Downs offers solid Thursday card
One day after a modest winter storm nixed harness racing throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, Dover Downs offered a solid card on Thursday as the three-year-olds competed for a berth in the various Delaware Standardbred Breeders Fund finals next Thursday and older horses clashed in the Preferred Handicap.
In the two early, non-betting races on the card that were transferred over from the cancelled Wednesday program, both Go Sandy Go (Jason Green) and Gracefullyforgiven (Art Stafford, Jr.) both secured a berth in their $100,000 DSBF final for three-year-old pacing fillies. Go Sandy Go rebounded from a nose setback last week to score by five lengths in 1:54, while Gracefullyforgiven prevailed by a length in 1:55.2 in her seasonal debut.
Go Sandy Go, a sophomore daughter of Roddy's Bags Again trained by Josh Green, rebounded from a 1-20 setback in the opening round elim to notch her second win in three starts this year and record her fourth win in six career tries. Gracefullyforgiven, winner of the first $100k final last year at Harrington, debuted in fine fashion and notched her sixth win in eight career tries for owner-trainer Jeff Clark.
Then in the first parimutuel race on the card, Evolution Tour (Tim Tetrick) notched his second straight win of the series and notched his sixth win in 10 lifetime tries for trainer Jim King, Jr. of Wakizashi Hanover fame. A sophomore son of Roddy's Bags Again, Evolution Tour looms one of the serious favorites for the $100k final for three-year-old pacing colts. He was second in both DSBF finals last season at age two, losing both by a combined margin of two noses to Slick Tony.
Speaking of Slick Tony (Russell Foster), the defending champion of this division notched his first win of the season when he gained command soon after the start and edged clear from Transitioning Joy (Montrell Teague) to score in 1:52.3. A sophomore son of No Spin Zone owned, bred and trained by George "Ronnie" Leager, Slick Tony recorded his first win in two outing this year and now owns 10 wins from 13 lifetime starts with career earnings of over $165,000. Slick Tony will be among the favorites for the final along with Evolution Tour and Monday's post position draw will go along way toward determining the odds.
Then just past the midway point of the card, Super Imposed N (Corey Callahan) benefited from patient handling and found room inside of favored Major Uptrend (Tony Morgan) and Soto (Art Stafford) to forge a mild 5-2 upset in the $30,000 Preferred Handicap for older pacers. A six-year-old Jereme's Jet gelding owned and trained by Michael Hall, Super Imposed N notched his fourth win from 10 starts this year and now owns an 18-9-6 slate and earned $74,000 from 10 seasonal outings.
