Dover Downs offers solid Thursday card
Amid the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping throughout the land, harness racing fans perhaps took a respite from encountering the mall drama by taking a glimpse at the solid program that Dover Downs had to offer on Thursday.
In the penultimate race on the card, the $25,000 Open for older pacers, Rock N Roll Jet (Kim Vincent) benefited from a second over journey behind Blazing Bobby Sox as 3-5 choice Daiymir carved out the early fractions, angled three-wide at the head of the lane and just got up to post a 20-1 shocker in 1:50.2. Owned and trained by William "Buddy" Bright, Rock N Roll Jet had been fifth in the $100,000 Potomac Pace at Rosecroft Raceway in his previous start.
In fact, Rock N Roll Jet was the dominant force in the Rosecroft Open I Handicap throughout the fall meet and was easily tabbed as the track's pacer of the meet. On Thursday evening he was able to take his winning ways on the road and overhaul Open company at Dover Downs. Blazing Bobby Sox was the dominant force at the Harrington Raceway spring meet and later won the $40,000 Governor's Cup on the lucrative Governor's Day card in late July.
One race earlier in a $15,000 Winners Over class for pacers, Sweet Rock (Allan Davis) gained command in a 27 flat opener, yielded to Sprinter N (Jonathan Roberts) before the half in 54.4, sat a tight pocket down the backside and through the far turn as favored Slick Tony (Montrell Teague) made his presence known, angled to the passing lane and got up to score in 1:50.3 as the 7-2 third choice. It was the sixth win in 26 starts this year for the Wayne Givens trainee who appears headed to next week's Open.
Then one race earlier in a non-winners of $9,001 last six starts class for pacers, Bags To Riches (Victor Kirby) lived up to his role as the 1-2 favorite when he quarter moved to command well before the half in 55.3, maintained an honest tempo by three-quarters in 1:23.4 then edged clear to a two-length score in 1:51.1. Another talented Givens trainee, Bags To Riches notched his third win from 18 starts this year and pushed his seasonal earnings past $37,500 while taking a new season's mark.
