Early-Week Blowout With $65 Winner At Northfield; Miami Pick Places, Pays $37 To Partner A $187 Exacta; Winter Series Score

Some big numbers and not so big numbers developed for us through this week’s coverage period, with the horses-to-watch list (H2W) contributing to the high side. Let’s go over our success and failure from all of the suggested wagering. Thursday, Jan. 31 Although Monticello cancelled due to weather during the day, ending the hopes of our Power Plays, Yonkers held its program that evening. We won one of two of our features with Perlucky ($2.30, $2.10, $2.10), which did not fool the majority of bettors, and we were second in the other feature with First Class Act ($2.50, $2.30), beaten by the public’s second choice. Friday, Feb. 1 The winter series ended at Woodbine/Mohawk and with two finals. We struck with dead accuracy in our probable scenario for the Snowshow Final, getting a decent price, too, from Legal Bettor ($7.60, $4.80, $3.50). The Blizzard Final was won by the favorite, while we finished third with the public’s third choice, Sand Artist ($2.40). The second choice placed. Saturday, Feb. 2 Our feature on this night was a Power Plays at the Meadowlands. We neglected added the most likely public choice in our suggested quartet of contenders for the exotics. The public choice won and we complemented that win coming in second with CC Big Boy Sam ($3.40, $2.40), creating an exacta worth $27.20. The place horse, of course, was one element in the superfecta and we listed the fourth element, Show Me Up (6-1). The 10-cent exotic came back $15.13. Our two other contenders were Skyway Billy (11-1) who finished sixth and Dalton Did It (88-1), who finished eighth. H2W LIST RESULTS The H2W results list across-the-board prices. Also, exactas listed are included when a H2W horse finishes second with a race favorite or the first two finishers making up the exacta are H2W horses (an asterisk appears when both horses were listed to complete a cold exacta). The note “ok” determines that prices published are correct even when a show price exceeds a place price or any or all of the prices are the same. This week, there were 38 active horses (an 11-percent win hit rate and a 42-percent ATB [across-the-board] hit rate). Crazed is expected to stand at stud in Sweden this year. Crazed is a winner of $1-million-plus. He has sired the winners of more than $23 million to date. He has produced 47 trotters with sub-1:55 records and 55 $100,000-plus earners. He is the sire of a pair of millionaires: Crazy Wow ($2.5 million) and JL Cruze $1.3 million). In Europe, Crazed has multiple stakes winner,s including Tumble Dust. Northfield officials announced that the track has added Sunday, Feb. 10 to its racing calendar. The race date will carry a customary 6 p.m. post time. The added race date, approved by the Ohio State Racing Commission, is a make-up date for the Jan. 20 program, cancelled due to severe weather. Also, Northfield announced the addition of a $20,000 Pick 5 total pool guarantee to its card as of Jan. 29. Northfield’s Pick 5s, Pick 4s, Pick 3s and 20-cent Super High Fives offer a takeout rate of 14 percent. Buffalo Raceway did not open as planned on Jan. 30 due to winter-storm conditions. The 66-day meet’s start was pushed ahead to Feb. 2. Buffalo features racing on Wednesday and Saturday evenings through March with post times set for 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. Friday night racing begins in April with a 5 p.m. post. The season comes to a close on Saturday, July 20. Two Sunday afternoon cards are on tap June 16 and June, underway at 12:30 p.m.. The track will be dark on June 14 and June 21. Buffalo has initiated a new condition sheet with ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ classifications. The racing secretary said the system is like the dog racing-classification scale. He said there were many problems with the former class system, including if a horse finished second, ti had to step up a class or two in its next race. That rule does not apply now. A winner only has to step up a single level and if it does not finish first, second or third in three races, it may drop down one level. Remember Wakizashi Hanover? After 80 starts and a resume that did not live up to his expectations, reports indicate he “finds himself in unfamiliar territory to start the new year.” Wakizashi Hanover, who has just turned seven, is getting a rest from racing in Nova Scotia, according to his connections. His owners said they have been racing him steadily since he was two (he just turned seven). At four he had two throat operations and then developed a tendon problem, which he raced with in Canada. The pacer’s claim to fame was beating Wiggle It Jiggleit in the North America Cup. Though it was the result of time and trip, he was expected to race far better than he did at three and as an older pacer.
