Evangeline Downs Quarter Horse Meet Begins Wednesday, September 28
The Louisiana Quarter Horse circuit shifts to Evangeline Downs in Opelousas on Wednesday, September 28. The 46-day racing season runs through December 17 with an evening racing schedule of Wednesday -Saturday beginning at 5:35 p.m. (Central).
Evangeline Downs hosts the only seven-figure Quarter Horse race in the state. The $1,000,000 LQHBA Breeders Futurity (RG1) for two-year-old Louisiana-breds will take place on Saturday, November 19, with trials set for Friday, October 28. Last year's champion, Jess A Saint, a son of Jess Louisiana Blue, sold for $7,200 at the 2015 LQHBA Yearling Sale. He was the tenth-fastest qualifier in trials, but saved his best performance for the final. With rider Raul Ramirez, Jr. aboard, he surged to the wire and collected a check for $445,000 for his overjoyed connections. The previous year's winner, Jls Dashn Zoomn, was purchased for a mere $7,500 at the 2013 LQHBA Yearling Sale. This is one of the latest futurities on the Quarter Horse calendar and always has a tremendous field for the final.
