Fair Grounds Pick of the Week for February 2
Saturday's seventh race at Fair Grounds is the co-featured $60,000 Lloyd Captain Maestri Memorial, an about one-mile grass test for three-year-olds.
CORRUZE (#6) (7-2) enters the race perfect in two starts on grass. The Into Mischief colt surprised at first asking at Keeneland last October going 5 1/2 furlongs on the turf, easily winning on debut by four lengths at odds of 12-1. Left in his wake were Bourbon in May and Philosophy, both next-out graduates.
Breaking from an outside post in a 6 1/2-furlong, main track allowance at Churchill Downs next out, Corruze was bumped leaving the gate and finished a distant sixth, a position he held throughout. Favored to rebound on January 11 in an about 5 1/2-furlong turf allowance at Fair Grounds, Corruze rallied strongly late (with the rail out) to win by 1 3/4 lengths.
Trainer Chris Hartman stretches the colt around two turns for the first on Saturday, and from a pedigree and running style perspective it shouldn't pose too much of a hurdle. With former jockeys Robby Albarado and Joe Bravo now riding elsewhere this winter, Mitchell Murrill takes the mount.
