While fans of the National Football League were keen on watching several contests on Sunday afternoon, standardbred racing fans were focused on the action at a trio of five-eighths mile ovals.
Sunday evening at Rosecroft Raceway, Cool Casper (Roger Plante, Jr.) kicked off the card by prevailing handily as the 3-10 favorite in a non-winners of three races or $35,000 lifetime class for younger pacers. A sophomore son of Duneside Perch trained by Trevor Stafford for owner Jody Lee Cahall, Cool Casper notched his first win in three starts at the meet and now sports a 5-2-2 slate and $23,000 banked from 17 starts this year and lowered his lifetime mark in the process.
Then three races later in a non-winners of two races lifetime class, B A Rocket (Russell Foster) lived up to his role as the 1-5 favorite when he scored by two lengths in 1:55.2. A sophomore son of Cam's Rocket owned and trained by Brian Callahan, B A Rocket posted his third win in five starts at the meet and now sports four wins and $14,000 banked from 15 starts this year. He was second in each of his two local setbacks and looms one of the budding star on the circuit.
Several races later in the non-winners of $4,000 last five starts class for older pacers, Capital Builder (Jonathan Roberts) ended a five-race skid and lived up to his role as the even-money choice by scoring in 1:53.2. A five-year-old Somebeachsomewhere gelding trained by Megan Roberts for her father William "Bib" Roberts of Yankee Co-Ed fame, Capital Builder now owns 10 wins and $52,000 banked from 32 starts this year.
Then one race later in the featured $12,000 Open I Handicap for older pacers, Rock N Roll Jet (Kim Vincent) rallied from well off the pace and widest of all to score by three lengths in 1:50.4. A nine-year-old Rocknroll Hanover gelding trained by William "Buddy" Bright, Rock N Roll Jet recorded his second straight win in the Open and his third win in six starts at the meet and he now owns a 7-6-4 slate and $62,000 banked from 32 seasonal tries.
That same evening at Pompano Park, Dinky Dune (Mike Simons) capped the early daily double by rallying second over to capture the non-winners of $4,500 last four starts/optional $17,500 class by three lengths in 1:53.2. Trained by Dane May, Dinky Dune now owns a 3-2-2 slate and earned nearly $14,000 from 18 starts this year and just missed equaling his seasonal best clocking.
Then three races later in a non-winners of $5,500 last four starts class for older pacers, You Said It (Wally Hennessey) prevailed by a length over Annihilator (Aaron Byron) in 1:53. Fritzie Pic Up Man notched his ninth win from 39 starts and pushed his earnings past $46,500 and likely earned a spot in the Open II next Sunday where he figures to be competitive despite the double-jump in class.
That same evening at Pocono Downs, Springsteen (Simon Allard) easily proved to be the boss of a non-winners of seven races lifetime class for younger pacers when he prevailed as the 3-5 choice in 1:52. A sophomore trained by Rene Allard, Springsteen has spent much of the season facing the sport's best three-year-old pacers in lucrative, major stakes and now boasts a 4-3-2 slate and $365,000 bankroll from 17 seasonal outings.
