The Mutuel Field (#24) in Pool 2 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager (KDFW) closed as the favorite when wagering ended Sunday evening.
Listed at 7-2 on the morning-line, the “All Other Three-Year-Olds” interest was bet down to 5-2 favoritism by the time Pool 2 closed.
There were four individual interests who closed at single-digit odds.
Champion and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) hero Good Magic (#10) and multiple Grade 1 winner Bolt d’Oro (#3) were the lowest single betting interests when bet down to 8-1 after the duo opened at 10-1 on the morning line.
Neither Good Magic nor Bolt d’Oro has made his sophomore debut yet, with the former headed to the March 3 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G1) at Gulfstream Park and the latter targeting the San Felipe Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park on March 10.
Audible (#1) and McKinzie (#13) closed at 9-1 after showing up at 12-1 and 8-1, respectively, on the morning line. McKinzie scored a 3 1/2-length win in the Sham Stakes (G3) on January 6 at Santa Anita Park while Audible romped by 5 1/2 lengths in the Holy Bull Stakes (G2) at Gulfstream Park on February 3.
The second of four 2018 KDFW pools for the May 5 Kentucky Derby saw an increase of 58.1 percent in total wagered over the same pool in 2017.
The Win pool equaled $363,389 and the Exacta pool came to $158,262, for a total of $521,650 by the time wagering closed Sunday. Last year’s Pool 2 totaled $330,043, with $227,881 bet in the Win pool and $102,162 wagered in the Exacta pool.
The Kentucky Derby Future Wager continues with Pool 3 on March 9-11.
