Hanson: How I'm playing Gulfstream's Rainbow 6

March 31st, 2018

With a potential total pool hovering around $20 million and a mandatory payout, Saturday's Rainbow 6 at Gulfstream Park is obviously worth taking a shot at. Here's my ticket:

Race 9

#7 ART COLLECTION (9-5) is most logical given his strong debut and swift half-mile work last week. Privately acquired in the interim and has switched barns from Chad Brown to Scooter Dickey. Others in the field have a chance to improve second out at juicier odds. #2 RHODE ISLAND made up some ground behind a softer pace first out and adds blinkers here. #5 C C RIDER had a troubled beginning facing Florida Derby (G1) start Hofburg on the dirt. Likely bled as he adds Lasix, bred for turf, and goes for potent Matz/Velazquez combo. #6 DAWOOD had a rough trip in his debut. He's a half to multiple Grade 1 winner Avenge. Will also throw in #1 WISELY, who showed noticeable improvement trying grass last time.

Race 10

#9 OUTPLAY was solid enough in two tries against champion West Coast last year. Has never raced this short, but has a win around one turn. #7 READY FOR RYE is a past winner of the Swale (G2) on this track. Latest at forgivable, faster than most, but has typically preferred wet ground he won't get here. #4 IMPRESSIVE EDGE could be a sleeper in his second start back from a log layoff. Galloped against allowance foes over this track and trip last winner and was subsequently placed in the Peter Pan (G3) and Iowa Derby (G3).

Race 11 -- Honey Fox (G3)

#3 STORMY VICTORIA and #10 ON LEAVE the apparent classes of the field, and hopefully will get the necessary pace to set up their late bids.

Race 12 -- Gulfstream Park Oaks (G2)

Definitely no standouts in this seemingly modest renewal. #6 BLONDE BOMBER simply might not have enjoyed recent travels to New Orleans and Tampa. Breeders' Cup third-placer loves Gulfstream, though, and perhaps can rebound on her home surface. #9 PRINCESS WARRIOR placed in the Alcibiades (G1) and against future Honeybee (G3) winner Cosmic Burst last fall, so she has sufficient class. Decent get-fit prep on turf for this. #12 MIHRAB should continue to improve the farther she goes and is out of a mare that was a graded stakes winner on this track. Addition of blinkers might help keep her closer to the pace.

Race 13 -- Pan American (G2)

#8 SADLER'S JOY turned in an incredible rally to win the Mac Diarmida (G2) last time and is the defending titlist of this race. #3 HI HAPPY very solid in his return to turf in debut for Pletcher. Won Argentina's most important race, the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (G1), at 1 1/2 miles so distance obviously no issue. #7 BIGGER PICTURE a must-include given his efforts against Sadler's Joy last summer.

Race 14 -- Florida Derby (G1)

While potentially ripe for a horse to step up at a longer price, early favorites #8 AUDIBLE and #6 CATHOLIC BOY are the ones we'll use. Latter already a winner over this distance and picks up Irad Ortiz.

The 20-cent ticket: 1,2,5,6,7 with 4,7,9 with 3,10 with 6.9,12 with 3,7,8 with 6,8 = $108

Good luck!
