Harness Preview: Picks and Horses to Watch June 9-13

Selected features and the never-ending TwinSpires’ horses-to-watch list (H2W) share keys to success in exotics, win, place and show payoffs.

Thursday, June 9

MOHAWK MILES

Each Thursday we highlight some probable long shots from Mohawk Park. If they do not win at first crack we add them to the H2W the following week as bet-backs or in selected features, adding new possibilities to this section.
R3 – #5 Blue Bayou Deo: Bet-back from refund race, two back had good finish third at 16-1.
R8 – #4 Unbeatable Kemp: Beaten favorite in May, returns to conquer.

 

BLAZING PACERS

Running Aces, Race 8

The local Burning Blaze Final ($15k) features sophomore pacers bred well enough for a serious look. The Morning Line (ML) favorite (4-5) is #1 Search The Sea (Downbytheseaside), who won two of five. The He's Watching colt #3 Snoah is the top earner with a 5-1 ML. The third ML choice, #2 Beachy Boy Hill, is the contender we see with the most value.
In the recent leg of the “Blaze,” the Maria Alvarez-trained colt got a late start from post 8 and tired following cover on the outside at 11-1. This is only his fourth start. The son of the speedy Sunshine Beach leaves from post 2 and should be competitive. (Note—Sunshine Beach at three was one of only two colts to beat Captaintreacherous.)
Also on our radar is the son of A Rocknroll Dance, #4 Headlining. Also in his fourth outing, Headlining was in the same race where he was 65-1 and took fourth racing well though passed by Snoah.

Friday, June 10

GOODTIMES ELIMS

Mohawk, Races 5, 7

Race 5
The earliest auditions for the Hambletonian take place in a pair of ($30k) elims. The first elim favorites should be the obvious #5 Fast As The Wind and #1 Pretender. We see an alternate: #3 Esplosione. Per Engblom could be handling the division’s surprise champ. The 12-1 winner, an Ontario Sires Stakes winner, swallowed the Mohawk surface and a few Goodtimes foes and still may go off at a swell price.

Race 7
Another surprise would be #8 Mercutio. The step up may be moot if he is as forceful as his recent win, which may be in need of a ground-saving trip unless he was merely jogging last out. On tap is also #4 World At War Deo, who was a sharp second in a state-bred at Tioga from an 8-hole launch.

Saturday, June 11

ERIE BATTLE

Northfield Park, Race 11

The Battle of Lake Erie ($200k) has collected nine FFA pacers to face one another again and there’s plenty of arguments on the table for each. On these “flying turns” we like the inside speed of #2 Nicholas Beach and the second-tier railed #9 Catch The Fire to fly on the bias. Your best hope for a price is between the two who can stay out of trouble and will offer better prices than usual.

FAN HANOVER ELIMS

Mohawk, Races 2, 3

Race 2
Brett Pelling’s #4 Treacherous Dragon is as good as they come and is ready to march through any number of stakes to earn plenty. Her May victory at Philly was prep enough to win this and makes more evidence for the final.

Race 3
A chance to have a duo battling one another from the Pelling barn could be the story of the Fan Hanover Final this year. #6 Wickedly Innocent could actually offer a great price coming from a conditioned event she won at the Meadowlands. #5 Queen Of Success followed Treacherous Dragon at Philly and deserves a contender’s spot.

ROSES ARE RED ELIMS

Mohawk, Races 6, 7

Race 6
Beating #1 Test Of Faith in an elim will offer a good payoff. She’ll make the final but may need a race on the Canadian carpet to do so. At least that is the only excuse we’ll speculate as we look for a price from #3 Amazing Dream. She beat Drama Act, arguably better, the way she could beat “Faith” here for Linda Toscano.

Race 7
#2 Lit De Rose is home and dry. She is our upset property to beat #1 Racine Bell and #3 Fire Start Hanover, both of whom have brand names in Ontario. A decent price offered, the team of Moreau—Filion are on target with this one coming off a sharp qualifier at the Meadowlands to take on this crew.

NORTH AMERICA CUP ELIMS

Mohawk, Races 4, 8

Race 4
#6 Night Hawk has been carefully managed to win an elim and improve for the final and he is sitting pretty and with the best price you may get on him all season if we’re right. #5 Stonebridge Helios and #4 Pebble Beach will hopefully attract the dollars needed to keep Night Hawk an overlay.

Race 8
#5 Early Action is a Huntsville colt raring to explode, and racing well against the likes of Allywag Hanover and other elders in his qualifier makes Joe Holloway’s student a must as a “Cup” contender.
