Harness racing: Little Brown Jug meet picks for Sept. 22

The Delaware County Fairgrounds' Little Brown Jug meet continues Tuesday, Sept. 22, so let's review the top races we'd like to bet on the 14-race program.

Race 1: Buckeye Stallion Series, 2-year-old fillies

Anette Lorentzon's filly, #5 Bathsheba AS, should register her first win in a mild upset, as morning-line favorite #7 Chip It In could lose needed ground leaving from an outside post.

Race 7: Ohio Breeders Championship, 2-year-old colts and geldings

Christopher Beaver's duo, #1 Perron and #2 Winning Ticket, are the deserving public choices. The four others in this field have to pray for those two to either duel or gallop to have any chances.

For exotics, if you use the Beaver duo on top, consider #5 Rose Run Wilson to be involved, if not as an upset winner.

Race 9: Buckeye Stallion Series, 2-year-old fillies

Many Ohio-bred-based races on "Jug" week present imbalanced fields, that is, a mixture of horses from pari-mutuel tracks and some from non-betting, slower racing state-fair tracks. This results in many prohibitive favorites looking downright heroic when winning.

In this affair, 0-for-6 #5 Broknheartsville has a pari-mutuel résumé that outclasses the other six. That could be why David Miller picked up the drive. Listed as the second choice on the morning line, the daughter of top sire Triumphant Caviar should get a good share of the win-pool money.

Morning-line favorite, #3 Katie's Lucky Day, may be the top public choice, but Broknheartsville could snap her maiden status at a good price.

Race 11: Ohio Breeders Championship, 2-year-old colts and geldings

Veteran training star Virgil Morgan Jr. will send out #4 Street Gossip to give this crew a trouncing. Her morning-line price of 7-5 is wishful thinking.

The sole question of competition here is state-fair filly #6 Ohmyheart. She has eight wins from 10 starts, but has her work cut out for her.

Perhaps she is the perfect exacta partner for Street Gossip? Or does she fall in love with this track and show bettors how a horse can improve without obvious evidence?

Reversing this exacta is not foolish, nor is a small win bet on Omyheart.

Race 13: Buckeye Stallion Series, 2-year-old fillies

Driver Aaron Merriman will have #1 Charming Nancy looking for a wire-to-wire win, but even with the inside post and four wins from five starts behind the filly, the abundance of speed in the field could prove a plus for a slower filly saving ground.

That gal could be #4 Sheni AS. Lorentzon's second daughter of the fairly unknown sire Lionhunter comes to this event off a win at Scioto and it was won with just the type of style that could pull off a mild upset here, with the help of horses forcing Merriman's mount to prove her worth.
